The 2.4 GigaHZ frequency range that this unit uses is also used by some cordless phones, wireless routers and other wireless devices. I set the first camera in a Breezeway between my house and garage about 50 feet from the receiver. When connected to a TV monitor the picture had a horizontal rolling bar and static like distortion. The sound was so filled by clicks and buzzes that nothing could be heard above it. I switched cameras and frequencies with the same result. I also moved the monitor closer to the camera with no improvement. I returned the product the next day. I can only conclude that the interference was caused by other wireless devices in my home or neighborhood.

I sure wish that there was a standard way to express how wide or narrow the lens view is. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this camera was very wide angle, maybe 90 degrees or maybe more.I see my whole front yard, and quality is very good when compared to cameras of similar price. The night vision is not as wide and is average for this price range. Great deal in my book

Logitech WiLife Digital Video Security--Hidden Master System Camera Review

Logitech WiLife Digital Video Security--Hidden Master System Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are three sets that are nearly identical, and differ only in the type of camera: this one (hidden camera), the outdoor starter kit, and the indoor starter kid.for more comprehensive reviews, look at those other kits as well.

As for my opinion, this set does what it says it does in a pretty seamless fashion: you install the software, plug the camera into the wall, plug a USB adapter into the wall and your computer, make some minor configuration changes and you are all set.I have no doubt we could have gotten a better system cheaper but not one as seamlessly integrated.

We looked at many different systems and bought this one instead because:
- most spy cams broadcast for TV...you then need a TV/VCR to record, or a separately purchased adapter to make it work with your computer, and we weren't technically confident enough to want to buy different pieces and figure out how to get them working together
- some spy cams are self-recording (they contain memory internally) but these tend to be pricey AND they limit how much you can record; they will fill up if you don't clear them out regularly, and for our purposes that wasn't practical
- most "wireless" spy cams work on a WiFi wireless network, which is great if you have one, but we wanted this for use in a place we didn't have wifi; this one works by transmitting over your home or office electrical system.
- the cost of the system includes a website you can set up to view your camera remotely (although if you have a firewall you'll only be able to watch 3 minute pieces; if the system can connect directly, which might require configuring your router which some people will find daunting, you can watch constantly). So, that said, here are some cons:
- only works on PCs, not macs
- 95% of the configuration is a piece of cake, but some aspects are confusing, like how to schedule alerts, and setting up for emailing alerts
- the program has many features that are in the program but you can't click on them -- they are there as advertisements for a "platinum" version of the software that costs $80 a year. It's annoying to have a screen full of buttons you aren't able to click, and to have advertising be such a prevalent portion of the interface
- this one is kind of petty, but it would be nice of the clock that hides the camera had an alarm, since we had to remove a "real" clock in place of this one
- the camera is fine for security, but the image is kind of strange - it appears to be infrared?Which means the colors are bizarre.Reds turn yellow, greens and blues turn white.Which is probably fine for security purposes, but don't be expecting to get a high quality video out of it

Q-See QS100B Video and Power 100-Foot BNC Male Cable with 2 Female Connectors Review

Q-See QS100B Video and Power 100-Foot BNC Male Cable with 2 Female Connectors
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed 3 Q-See QSC48030 surveillance cameras on the outside of my house. The first two installations went without a hitch (the cameras are great) using the provided 60 foot cables but the third camera needed an 80 foot cable so I purchased the 100 foot Q-See brand cable. After reading the comments in Amazon, I was not surprised to receive a white cable instead of a black one and really didn't care one way or the other.

The cable came with two female-to-female adapters and a short (a few inches) power extension cable which I thought was a nice unexpected plus.Again because of reading the comments, I was extra careful in running the cable so as not to stress it and cause a break in the cable (the wires are very thin).

After completing the installation, I had no video signal and after troubleshooting, found that the cable had an intermittent short in the video cable next to the stress relief junction on the camera end.I did not want to go through the trouble of installing another cable and since I am an Electrical Engineer decided to just repair it. After connecting the cable again, there was still no video so after another hour of troubleshooting found that the power connector on the camera end had an intermittent open so I repaired that connector as well.

Everything checked out so I energized the system again and there was video but there were also unwanted bans of interference marching down the screen on that camera view. The problem is that (other than problems associated with a cheap cable) the cable has no shielding and therefore is very susceptible to pick-up from other wires and circuits. So here is my solution:I will leave the power part of the cable in place to supply power to the camera but will install a separate 100 foot shielded BNC-Male to BNC-Male cable for the video which can be gotten from Amazon for less $30 (do a search on Amazon for "Cables To Go 40032 100ft" and click on the Used and New link). Sure that is an extra expense but my time is worth something too; I spent hours of extra time installing this third camera that I could have been doing something else with all because of that cheap cable!

Overall, I am very satisfied with this product, however it does have problems with the mounting bracket. The mounting bracket has an adjustible elbo that is very easy to screwup. Once you adjust the camera to your desired field of view, you may find that you cannot tighten down the mount to hold the camera steady. I have mounted 11 camera's and had a difficult time with the mounts on 4 of them. I have found that if you are very gentle and try not to move the elbo at all you can get a good tight mount that will not swing in the wind.

Lorex QLR464 4-Channel PCI DVR Card with 4 Indoor/Outdoor Night Vision Security Camera (Black) Review

Lorex QLR464 4-Channel PCI DVR Card with 4 Indoor/Outdoor Night Vision Security Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first bought the LW2702 wireless system. It would not carry a signal 50 feet through my vinyl sided 1/2 inch sheathed split level.I called Lorex and they wanted to send me a new system right away.In the mean time, I looked over their website snd found this.I decided to try this system since Lorex was so suportive. It is even less expensive than the LW2702.

Four cameras, a 32 bit card and software that sends email alerts and a snapshot; plus you can access the system on the internet via a ddns net run by Lorex.THIS seemed to solve every concern I had; I did not just want to discourage and record, I wanted a system that would email us while we were on vacation and that we could use to call the police.

I decided to put 3 cameras in the house in logical traffic areas. These will be set to alert us.The fourth will go outside to capture vehicle traffic in the drive.

The software allows each camera to be programmed seperately; alert types, when to record, etc.You can also set up schedules for each camera alert and monitor function; for example, basement shop every night between midnight and 5 AM; bedroom hallway every workday from 8AM to 3PM; and all inside cameras for the two week vacation while leaving the driveway camera always set to record activity without sending alerts.Pretty powerful stuff.

You neeed to precisely follow the instructions for setting up internet access which allows you full control of your monitoring system. It took a day for the internet to register my system domain; but it works.

OK, the mediocre.Although Server 2000 is supported, it will not run on windows home server.Or, it must be installed on any 32 bit winXP or higher system.IT CANNOT run on 64 bit; needs a new card plus new software.

There are is one irksome quirk, which is worked around by using internet access. The program window has NO minimize/size/maximize/close icons in the upper right corner. Also not present with a right click. It settles in the upper left corner of your monitor and CANNOT be dragged someplace else (like your second monitor with extended desktop).SInce you access your system via IE (have not yet tired Firefox), you CAN relocate the display and controls since you simply drag the IE window where you want.

We live in a rural area with a lot of ground floor windows.I have always been skeptical of alarm company monitoring services.THIS system allows me to verify for myself what is happening and to call the police; or, since I have a computer based phone answering machine (left very loud so we can hear it thoughout the house) I can call the house and deliver a pretty creepy warning to whover is in the house.

Each camera is provided with a 60 foot video and power cable. This works well for my interior cameras, but I will need an extension for my driveway camera.

I only installed this last week; but I have tested it pretty hard and it works so far.Turns out I am glad the LW2702 did not work as expected; while it would have captured events the LW2702 cannot send out alertsnor provide the control of this system. The "downside" is that you have to run wires to your computer and you must have a computer that is always on and configured to reboot after a power failure.

Plus, you can check the house from ANY computer anywhere in the world either with IE or the provided client software.

AS far as I concerned, this beats paying a monitoring service $10 a month.I hope it continues to work.

LOREX LW2301 4-Channel Wireless Quad Surveillance System with Digital Video Recorder & 1 Indoor/Outdoor Motion Camera Review

LOREX LW2301 4-Channel Wireless Quad Surveillance System with Digital Video Recorder & 1 Indoor/Outdoor Motion Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the record, I also own the Logitech WiLife Digital Video Security--Hidden Master System Camera so I can do some comparisons for setup and picture quality and features.

The Lorex is extremely easy to setup. You just have to plug in the base station device, plug in and mount the camera, insert the memory card and you're all but done with setup. At least physical setup. Before you allow the receiver to go on recording, you will want to set it up using the on screen menus (you must use the supplied AV cable and connect to a TV for this). This device uses composite connections for video/audio to your TV. Using the remote, press the menu button. From here you can easily pair a new device (if you have more than one camera; if just one camera the DVR and the camera are already paired), setup a schedule for recording (say if you want to record a specific place 24/7 or just during an 8 hour day), adjust the date/time and so on. Everything is rather simple and shouldn't be too difficult to understand.

The picture quality. I find that the quality of the picture, even with perfect signal strength from the camera, isn't that great. The images are washed out. Before you say "well it IS a security camera," this is an instance where I can compare this device to the Logitech Wi-Life system. The camera with the Wi-Life system auto adjusts it's colors whereas and looks decent; this device seems to only have a single setting and the images are OK to messy. Black shirts appear washed out blue which doesn't happen with the Wi-Life.

One thing this system has when compared to the Wi-Life, other than a better starting price, is a camera with built in infrared imaging. The Wi-Life has infrared only as a kind of expensive add on. With the Lorex system, this option is part of the system. The images from infrared are very good (they are black and white, but that's the nature of infrared).

Another thing this system has over the Wi-Life system is it doesn't require a PC to record. The Wi Life will ONLY record if you have it paired to software installed on a PC. I have a laptop setup in my house, hidden, that does my Wi-Life recording for me.

One thing the Wi-Life has that this system does not however is remote viewing. I can sit in my office at work, log into the Wi-Life system using Logitech's software, and see what is going on with any of the cameras setup around my house. With the Lorex, there is no such feature available on this model. You have to have the device with you or have the memory card with you. The Wi-Life can also be setup to email you if there is motion detected, another feature the Lorex system clearly lacks.

I have, however, experienced some issues with this unit. First, there seems to be a short in my power cable for the DVR. Any movement can cause the system to cycle power. This brings me to my second problem. I didn't realize this was happening and I removed the included memory card... while it was rebooting, and it has apparently damaged the card to the point of no longer being recognized as a device either in the DVR itself or in my PC. I plan on contacting their customer service department to see what can be done. Before deciding on this system or the Wi-Life, decide on what features you need. If remote viewing/access is required, this is NOT the system for you. If recording in the dark is required and you don't want to spend a lot of money, purchase this system. If you already have a PC you leave on all day, the Wi-Life may be the better option. If you don't want to invest in a new computer and leave it on all day, the Lorex is the way to go.

Either system will allow you to copy files to another media (CD, DVD, USB stick, etc) to hand off to law enforcement in case the unthinkable does happen. Picture quality on either system is OK and detailed enough to ID someone as well. The only difference is the Lorex is cheaper but also lacks some features found on the Wi Life.Over all I'm satisfied with the product. I will likely keep my Wi Life system setup but augment it with the Lorex for areas I don't want/need remote viewing.

For me, as long as I can get

We received the system and were impressed by the clarity of the picture and how easy it was to install, however, there are two major issues with this product. The first is that most doorbells are not at eye-level so to simply replace your doorbell with the camera (which is what is suggested), doesn't work. The camera has a clip-on on the back to allow you to adjust horizontally but not one vertically so you have to essentially do a full-install instead of working with your two-wire doorbell. The second issue is that the camera itself is bulky and looks cheap as a doorbell. It is made of cheap plastic and you'll be suprised as soon as you take it out of the box.I returned the product once I realize the lack of ability to vertically adjust the camera made it useless.

I bought 2 of this system because of the 5 star reviews but apparently I didn't get as lucky as the other guys who bought this troublesome system. Comes withuseless, cheap screws...almost every single one broke half way in even when the holes were pre-drilled. I had to leave some of them in to not damage the plastic mounting base. Hopefully the camera won't fall off. Image quality is decent but not impressive. after 1 hour of rain one of the "outdoor" cameras burned out and was filled with water on the inside. 24/7 customer support is non-existent...no one ever picks up the phone. I would not buy this again.

Skylink AA-433 Audio Alarm Review

Skylink AA-433 Audio Alarm
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Overall I like this product (and the entire system)... this product really only has one drawback:it doesn't participate in system "beeps"... while it DOES alarm when the system ALARMS, it doesn't beep when the system arms/disarms or when the system count-down timer is going.I would have liked it to do this because my main console is in an area that can't be heard very well throughout the house.A lot of times you can't hear the various system chimes -- which would have been substantially improved if this component did more than simply sound when the system alarm was triggered.:(

Otherwise, it's nice and loud and works well for it's main purpose.Eventually I'm considering getting 2 more: 1 for my garage and 1 for my backyard... to make my alarm REALLY NOISY.Currently, with this speaker and my main unit's speaker, the system is loud enough that anytime you are near them they actually hurt and disorient you). Not bad.:)

Average Reviews:

This unit functions very well and appears to be well built.Picture clarity is very good and audio quality is better than average. The high frequency makes the picture vulnerable to people movement and electronic interference as the maximum range is approached. Also, the box doesn't say one way other the other whether the camera is suitable for outside application, which it is not. Also, there is no battery isolation switch, so when the adapter power is removed, the camera switches automatically to lithium battery power. This is a disadvantage for applications where the camera is fired up by a remote motion sensor, and requires that the camera run all the time. All in all though, this is a good buy at the price.

I recently bought this system . I am quite happy with it! Here are my thoughts: Everything that came in the box was as expected.

con :each camerarequire running cable until a local power source shared (4 cam)

I was looking for was ensuring that each camera didn't require a local power source, as I didn't relish the idea of running receptacles to each camera location.

I will like single cable with an video connector that runs to each camera and carries both power AND video signal .

Plus : very cheap, nice picture.

I was impressed with the picture I got from the night vision from the cameras.

Easy install software and run.

Some of the features I like about this unit is of course the night vision cameras, the ability to view the cameras over the internet, the ability to record continuously or as motion sensors.

Astak DVR Security Surveillance System with 250 GB Hard Drive and 4 Weatherproof Cameras with Night Vision Review

Astak DVR Security Surveillance System with 250 GB Hard Drive and 4 Weatherproof Cameras with Night Vision

I purchased this from Costco for a little less than $500 to replace a Q-See DVR unit (Q-See QSD2304L 4 Channel H.264 Pentaplex Network DVR with (CIF) Realtime Recording per Channel) that produced blurry, pixelated images.

I was a little apprehensive purchasing this unit due to its cheap purchase price and little-known brand name however after a couple hours tinkering around with the DVR, I was impressed with its easy-to-use interface and good image quality throughput. Network setup is easy and the remote interface is very simple although much of the core menu options available on the DVR are not accessible through remote operation (one downside).Remote playback is slow (even on our broadband line) and not the ideal way to playback video, especially if you need to review more than a day's worth of recordings. The included USB mouse feels cheap although I'm glad it's at least an optical mouse and not the cheap mouseball-type that Dell gives you with their PCs unless you pay to upgrade. On occasion, the mouse cursor will jump around the screen like it has a mind of its own but I find that it's easier to just use the keypad instead of the mouse anyway.

Videos are searchable by event or time/date stamp. The DVR includes a built-in speaker for buzzer/alarm events such as video loss or motion detection although both alarms can be disabled within the DVR menu options if you'd rather not deal with the high-pitch alarm. Motion detection works well and I haven't come across any issues with it in the three weeks I've had this DVR.

The included cameras are CMOS and are suitable for mid-level security applications. For night-vision, I would definitely consider upgrading these cameras to more expensive CCD cameras. The bundle came with cables and the necessary power adapters so for most applications, you won't need to go out and purchase additional parts.

The buttons on the front panel could be positioned a little better (it would have been helpful to have the Enter key placed next to the Menu/Back key rather than having to jump back and forth across the keypad during initial setup). Our DVR came with a 250GB hard drive preinstalled so it's definitely an added bonus.

I would purchase this item again given the price although I would have liked to see more menu options during remote operation and better mouse control.

Swann SW276-YSS Security Yard Stake Warning Sign Review

Swann SW276-YSS Security Yard Stake Warning Sign
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought two signs, one for the front and one for the rear of my home. The biggest complaint I have is the cheap, plastic, stake used to hold the up the signs. They are way too short. When you push it into the ground, the sign (also plastic) is so low, no one would see it. I had to tape the sign to my rear storm door window so it could be readily seen. That looked tacky. I had to place the front sign in a flower box to be seen. That one keeps getting blown over when it is windy. My old sign (now broken after 20 years, from storm damage) from a previous security company had a strong, metal stake about four feet long. The Swann sign also came with stickers for windows and doors. They were written in English and Spanish. I thought the Spanish language stickers was a bit too much, inferring that Hispanics might try to break in my home. The yard sign itself was also bi-lingual. It is a matter of getting what you pay for. They were cheap in price and unfortunateluy, cheap in value. You may be beter off getting security signs from a box store where you can see them before you buy.
