I first saw this product in the Spy Store, next to the Spy Museum in Washington DC - pity I hadn't bought one then and saved all the postage and packing to UK!But worth the cost. For a few pound/dollars you get a pretty authentic looking device, which whirrs and flashes its little red light as it scans from side to side after its motion detector has kicked in.Battery powered, so cost effective.Clearly only a minor deterrent to committed intruders, but a very useful one at that.I like it, because it has all the appearances of the real thing, at a fraction of the cost - and probably just as effective, although I cannot confirm that. But we have not been burgled yet.

Wisecomm VDP1300 Black and White Video Door Phone - Medium (Cream) Review

Wisecomm VDP1300 Black and White Video Door Phone - Medium
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, I need to mention a few things:

When my product arrived, I found that the "Inside Monitor Unit" was *NOT WORKING*; luckly, I'm a trained electronics technician and quickly found a cracked trace (manufacture-defect) on the Video monitor module's circuit board and repaired it to "like-new" condition. I also noticed that the plastic housing on the inside unit is "somewhat faded" and that the "hook switch" for the handset was improperly-seated which caused it to remain in the "on-hook" position, even when the handset was taken out of its cradle. I have corrected this "malfunction" and properly-seated the hook switch so that it operates correctly. I suspect that this unit is either refurbished or used since this unit appears to have been "worked on" in one form or another even though I seclected "purchase new Item" from Amazon.

Once I have repaired the unit to "like new" condition, I found that it appears to be a rather NICE quality product.

Now my review:

The first thing that impressed me, is that the button station (outside camera unit) is incased in a STEEL housing.. this means it will resist vandalism and remain nice for years to come, even when semi-exposed to the weather.. *5 Stars* for it being a metal housing! This unit will serve WELL for installations where the unit will be mounted outside in a semi-protected fashion i.e screen porch or doorway under an awning or canopy or on a post, inside a cover hood.

Early tests also showed that the "night lighting" works pretty well and, even in total darkness, the camera is able to receive enough detail to easily-identify a subject, however, if the subject gets "too close" to the camera, the "night lighting" cannot function properly and a "dark spot" may appear at the subject. This unit should be installed where the subject will most-likely "not be right on top of it".

Although this unit is in a nice steel housing, it is my opinion, however, that the "button" on the camera unit is kinda "misleading" and may, in fact, confuse a visitor who has never used it before. (they may not even understand its a button at all!) Theres a little "bell-like" (I THINK its a bell) synbol molded onto the button, but its not very visable to someone who arrives at the door. I may RE-PAINT mine to a darker color just so that it sticks out more! Again, like the camera housing, the button is also made of steel which is very nice.

overall, the camera unit feels very-solid and I give it *5 Stars*.

About the inside unit:
The first thing I found "rather silly" is that theres a timer on the screen and intercom portion, even after having the handset off its cradle. Sure, I can see a reason for the Screen being on a timer as long as the handset is cradled, but once you take the handset off its cradle, it should immediately turn the unit fully-on. This isn't the case, however, and operating the unit requires you to:

1.. First, take the handset off the cradle and then..
2.. Press the "screen" button to turn the unit on

This is silly, in my opinion, and I think the unit should turn fully on at the moment you pick up the handset and remain on for as long as you have the handset off it's cradle. Of course, the "screen" button should remain on a timer and is good for "a quick peek" of the entryway at a glance without taking the handset off the cradle- and I plan to correct this issue in my unit before I install it!

Another issue is the handset is too "light" and I think it could use a small weight in it to give the handset that "solid feel"; thus, I'll be adding one to my unit promptly.

For these issues, I give the inside monitor unit *3 Stars*.

Installation:

The unit will install using "4-wire" and comes with its own 60 foot 4-lead shielded cable. Although a previous reviewer stated about "having to drill an oversized hole" to accomodate a odd-sized connector, this is *NOT* nessessary to do since the cable DOES easily-disconnect from its leads from inside the camera unit via screw-terminals (and also on the inside monitor unit).

If you are planning to mount this unit on an outside structure such as a fence post or gate enterance, you should have it professionally-installed and the outside unit *MUST* be properly-grounded! failure to do this can pose a safety hazzard and will greatly-shorten the life of your unit. also note: if you plan to use the "remote unlock button" on the inside monitor unit, you will have to use a "6-WIRE" installation and the 4-lead cable that comes with the unit will not work for a "6-wire" installation. (the contractor/installer should be aware of this condition.)

Overall, I give this unit 4 out of 5 Stars.

As a computer and Audio Video Tech with over 10 years of experience. I tell you go read the Forums in x10 even though the forum has been mostly deleted . You will know the hard hidden facts about this junk.

I had paid nearly $300- for a x10 camera kit for a client to install. The software is incompatible to all platforms. Has major glitches. Hardware , the cams are third class quality and so is the support. If you have nothing to do in life and want to sit and waste time on trying to figure out defective products then this is it.

Don't buy anything wireless from x10. Go Wired if you must. But then the software will not support its own hardware. So go figure ! or just stay away from it anyway.

Picture quality, construction quality, Night Vision, and Field of Vision are all a letdown and I returned it right away. For the price, I suppose this is still a good "deal", but if you want an excellent quality Dome Camera with decent Night Vision, superb build quality, and a wide angle view look at the unit labeled "vandal proof dome camera", also from Amazon. It is more expensive, but has a VERY hefty and sturdy feel to it.Range of IR is greater and MUCH less granulated, resolution in daytime is fantastic, and one unit in the corner of a square room or backyard can cover nearly everything. This product may be adequate for some applications, just be aware that it is very low-end.(I suppose I should give credit that it also includes audio, but given that this is advertised as an "indoor camera" one would wish for a much wider field of vision.)

I purchased this item in June 2010 and paid $399.

The product was easy to install, but only if you use the wires provided with the kit (comes with 60' per camera). The down side of using the included wires is, you must install the wires. My house was pre-wired for security cameras, but the pre-wiring used CAT5 and COAX so I had to create custom 4-pin DIN connectors.Creating custom DIN connectors required a great deal of soldering and heat shrinking, but it beat crawling through the attic and running wires through walls.

The cameras are decent, with okay resolution and okay frames-per-second (FPS).They only have a 60 degree range of view, so 4 cameras provides limited views.

The DVR is very disappointing. This system uses a single-function DVR, which means you can only do one thing at a time (either play back or record), but you cannot view the video if the unit is currently recording (you have to stop recording). The DVR also only supports a max of 30 FPS across all 4 channels/cameras.I allocated 10, 10, 5 and 5.The DVR also has poor resolution - maybe its the cameras, but I think its the DVR because the live video is much clearer than the recorded video. In addition, the DVR is rather cheap.I attempted to format the hard drive when I first installed it the unit, but got a message that there "was no hard drive."After hours of fussing with it, I finally just unplugged it for 30 minutes or so; after which it detected the hard drive and allowed me to format.

Connecting to the DVR: You can connect to the DVR in one of 2 ways - via a USB cable or via a network (including the internet).Connecting to an internal network (e.g., home network) is fairly simple, and can be done in a few minutes.Configuration for external network (e.g., internet) access is a bit more complicated.I eventually figured it out, thanks to some helpful websites, but it took 2 or 3 hours before I got it working. If you plan on accessing the DVR from your network, you cannot have the DVR connected via the USB too (not at the same time). When the USB is connected, the hard drive is "in use" by the computer connected via USB, and thus, other computers can only view live video - cannot playback recorded video.Of course, this is not explained in the manual and is definitely not obvious when logged in from a remote computer.

Software and Play back: To play back recorded video, you need the software (DxClient). There are two ways to access/use this software. One is to install it on your computer (requires Windows - sorry Mac users). The other is to use an Active-X control in Internet Explorer (sorry, but it doesn't work with Firefox).Either way works fine. The software (user interface) is straight forward, but it's also confusing. To playback video, you click an icon to bring up a play list, then select the video you want to play. The problem is, mine only shows one play list and when I click it, I can't tell if I'm playing a recording or watching live footage. Thus, either the software is buggy or the DVR is not recording; either way very disappointing.

Since this is my first surveillance system, I wasn't sure what to expect. However, I am not very satisfied with with this purchase. If I had to do it over again, I would have done more research before buying and would have paid more for a higher quality system.

First Alert P575 4 Camera SD Recordig Kit with 2GB SD Card Review

First Alert P575 4 Camera SD Recordig Kit with 2GB SD Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I searched around a lot for a system that would record onto portable media for a decent price. I found this item on Amazon and it looked to be a fair deal: 4 color cameras with motion detection and night vision capabilities.

The system does as it describes, it records video either through a scheduled recording or motion activation. Setting up was easy enough, but the manual is FAR from being descriptive enough and the software in the recorder is somewhat cumbersome. The manual is written in broken English, my favorite line being "The cameras incidental with was built in with motion sensor and the
recommended setting for this function is Off."

In order to review recordings, one must go through the entire list of recordings, one by one. There is no delete option, as the only way to remove recordings is to format the entire card or insert into a computer (which I tried and could not get the computer to recognize the card ??)

The manufacturer's website, [...] is no longer available as of this writing (6/12/09) and the only way I could access any manuals or information about the system I bought was to utilize Google's cache of the site.

The motion detection certainly does detect motion and records video according to how you have the system configured, but when I tested my recorder it ended up taking up the entire memory card with five second videos of absolutely no activity (despite attempting to adjust the sensitivity of the detection.)

If you are looking for a RELATIVELY cheap system that will record video as it is described to do, then this might be alright. Be forewarned that the software is barely adequate in terms of ease of use and functionality.

I certainly hope that the manufacturer's website reappears and that I can get some technical support for this system.

The picture quality was surprisingly good when in close proximity to the receiver. However, I could not get acceptable reception unless I was within a few feet of the receiver, which defeats the purpose. It was completely unusable in my home unless I was in the same room.I turned off my 2.4 GHZ phone and wireless router and it made no difference.I also tried changing the channels on the camera, but it also made no difference.

I gave it two stars (instead of none) because maybe it was my environment that was causing the interference, however I haven't had problems with other wireless devices in my home.I really wanted this camera to work.

I bought this at Lowes home store and I was impressed at first at the value.

Good: Clear video in well lit conditions - has microphone that works pretty well - comes complete with a 60ft long cable and power supply - comes with two mounts

Bad: The box says it is indoor/outdoor - the instructions say it should not get wet and needs to mounted in a sheltered location (semi-outdoor?) - it cannot be mounted behind a window or screen for nightime use because the infared LED's will reflect back into the camera rendering it useless

This is a great camera for indoors for the money. It is not a great camera for outdoors. You'll need to spend more for that.

Realistic Dome Security Camera - Imitation Surveillance Camera Review

Realistic Dome Security Camera - Imitation Surveillance Camera
Average Reviews:

Was having an issue with delivered packages being swiped from our doorstep. This has done the trick. For the price I can't complain too much. The motion detector light really does work. Installation was quite easy if your surface is softer (or if you have a drill for hard woods, etc.). I only wish the product had a completely opaque dome with the motion detection light elsewhere (so people on approach would not necessarily know which direction the "camera" was pointed).

Now you can deter robbery, theft, and vandalism without the high cost of a real outdoor security camera. Also recommended for security in parking lots. This is an actual surveillance camera in outdoor housing that has been modified into a "dummy" or fake security camera. This dome dummy camera is designed to imitate the small, high tech security cameras on the market today. Installs quickly and easily to the ceiling or wall using the included screws. Sierra Electric JB5293 Motion Sensor Entry Light Review

Sierra Electric JB5293 Motion Sensor Entry Light
Average Reviews:

The description states that this will shut off after 10 seconds of last activity - however, these shut off after 30 seconds of no activity.Actually, after 30 seconds it dims down slowly then completely shuts off (looks sort of cool how it does that too).
It has a very nice design, and you can angle the light panel to the position you want. What I did to install one light up quickly on a ceiling and another on a wall was to use heavy duty sticky back velcro strips.Works like a charm. These lights are very handy and even my picky husband likes them.
I hunted all over town for these lights (Target, Kmart, Walmart, Fred Meyers, Home Depot, and Lowes) but no one carried them nor had they even heard of these type of lights! All they carried were very small plug in 1 to 3 LED type lights. Don't they know that not all hallways or closets have plug in outlets? This type of light makes an excellent choice to do the job where there is no access to an electrical outlet.

Average Reviews:

When I got our first video monitor, I wondered if it would be useful, or just a gimmick, or one more way to worry about the baby! We've found it very useful. There are just some things that an audio monitor can't tell you. And being able to check on your child without the disturbance of going into her room can save a lot of trouble, especially in the transition times in the evening and in the morning, when little disturbances can lead to bigger ones.

The video was especially useful when our child was a little older and moving around more, and we had left her to settle herself - which sometimes can seem like crying herself to sleep! :-(We used the video monitor to see if she was just unsettled (so we very much did not want to go into the room, or she wouldn't learn to settle herself) or had gotten into a spot she couldn't get out of (stuck in the bars of the crib, or lost her lovey, so we needed to go in and set things right).Video monitors are also useful to see when a child is awake, and how awake - sitting, standing, lying down or trying to climb out of bed! - or on her way to sleep, or not.And they can be lots of fun, too, to watch and listen!

Our other monitor is analog, and once in a while we'd hear our neighbor talking on their cordless phone - which no doubt means they hear us sometimes!A digital monitor, like the Levana, should be private and static-free.

So, I really wanted to like this product.Plus, I really needed it when a new baby arrived. But while it has an attractive design and some interesting features, the Levana Babyview monitor doesn't seem especially workable or useful for us.

The main issue, of course, is the video and audio quality. Both are problematic on the Levana BabyView:

Video:The video quality seems barely adequate. The resolution on the baby's face is OK, but just. The frame rate seems too low - you don't get anything like continuous motion.Every several seconds, the video freezes. From time to time, it freezes for a much longer time. The video compression used results in a blocky, low resolution quality, though luckily that primarily affects low-contrast areas. Overall it's tolerable but not especially enjoyable to use, and lower quality most of the time than our analog monitor.

Audio:The audio had a persistent high pitched background whine when it was on.Also, it's apparently set to switch off and on at low volumes, so the audio is intermittent with lots of clicks, which is less than useful and more than irritating. The tiny microphone is in an odd location on the camera, it almost seems like an afterthought, perhaps that's part of the problem.Overall, much lower quality than our analog monitor.

Further, the user should be able to better control the audio - have a microphone that picks up even low level sounds, and have a volume control on the handset that you can adjust; then the user can decide what to hear.Good quality audio can add a lot of information to how the child is doing. You don't want to lose audio quality to get video - a monitor like this should have good quality audio and video.

Some aspects of the Babyview are well done:
- The design is fairly attractive and compact.(Handset is 5.8" H with the antenna x 1" deep without the clip x 2.5" wide.)
- The 2.3" screen is reasonably large.
- The auto-switching between regular light and night vision seems to happen quickly and effectively.
- The lithium ion battery in the handset is the best battery technology, in terms of power for the weight.(It's what's used in digital cameras and cell phones.)They claim over 4 hours of battery life.
- The power adapters work at US or international voltages.
- The included clamp for the camera is well made and seems likely to work well in a variety of setups.

Other features are good ideas that don't work well in practice:
- The voice activation feature, which leaves the screen and the sound off until it picks up some sound, helps conserve battery and perhaps parents' nerves and sleep. But it needs too much noise to switch on - it's either set to too low a level, or the microphone isn't sensitive enough. And again, this is something that the user should be able to adjust.
- The little curved base is clever, but doesn't work that well at the optimum focal range of 5 feet. When placed on a dresser next to the crib with the camera is tilted down enough to see the baby, the base blocks a big part of the image. In addition, when the camera is in the base, the camera starts to tilt due to the heavy filter on the power supply wire (a biggish black cylindrical part on the wire). So for both those reasons, the cute clever magnetic base isn't much use in practice.

Some of the features seem potentially nice but I'm not sure I'd use them - such as the nightlight and the music.I almost wonder if they added them to distinguish this product from their security cameras.

Finally, there are a couple elements of the design that aren't so great.Having a bright green power LED on the front of the camera is thoughtless on a baby monitor, though luckily it's easy enough to tape over (and there are so many lovely colors of electrical tape these days). And the glowing red night vision lights seem to have too much potential for distracting or even upsetting a child.

The wireless frequency is 2.4ghz, the same as wireless internet and some cordless phones. The Levana has enough channels (32, with auto signal hopping) that intereference shouldn't be a major problem, but I can't definitely evaluate that at this point.

The company's website is [...], though there's very little info there.Their parent company is SVAT Electronics, which makes security cameras and the like.So even though this is a new product from an unknown brand, they do have experience with this sort of thing.Perhaps their next generation of this product will have some of the wrinkles ironed out.
