Nice product, works well, details in the instructions are lacking but connecting it to a random timer is giving excellent results. I am considering getting a couple of more as gifts.

Product Description:
What is a "TV Simulator" and why would anyone want such a thing? Well, it's possibly the most effective home break-in deterrent ever invented...When you watch TV, you see images on a screen. But when you look at the light it casts in a room, the light from the screen melds to a uniform glow that changes with the changing images on the TV. The TV Simulator is a result of extensive research and development and is not just a random light source; real TV signals are not random, they are highly characteristic. It utilizes a built-in computer, latest generation super-bright LEDs of various colors, advanced optics and an opalescent diffuser lens to produce light of varying intensity and color that lights up a room just like a real TV does. The light effects of real TV programs- scene changes, camera pans, fades, flicks, swells, on-screen motion, etc. - are all accurately simulated. Just like a real TV, this device fills a room with color changes, both subtle and dramatic, in thousands of possible shades, constantly shifting among more and less dynamic periods, more vivid and more monochromatic, and brighter and darker scenes. The TV Simulator is completely unpredictable, and it never repeats. Even though the TV Simulator is only a tiny 3"x3"x2" in size and weighs only 2.4 ounces, its advanced technology allows it to produce effects equivalent to a 27" LCD television. But it draws less power than a typical night light! Just plug it into a wall outlet (AC adapter is included), and it's ready to go. In addition to a manual on/off switch, it even has a built-in light sensor option that can turn it on and off automatically according to light levels. The best location to place the TV Simulator is in a dark upstairs room where its light output is visible but the unit itself cannot be seen from outside. For ground floor locations, you should have blinds or drapes that are translucent or are adjusted to allow a little light through.

As someone else mentioned the instruction booklet is not very good. The window/door sensor has to be triggered DURING learn 2 times. Same with remote, push any button two times DURING learn.Another thing it that you cannot remotely access the unit by phone if you have a phone answering system that picks up sooner than 30 seconds. One drawback it that it calls phone numbers immediately if it is alarmed, no delay. So keep that in mind when testing or if you have a "false". It easy to operate after the programming. This DIY system will call 5 phone numbers after alarm. But, you must have a land line!It is a good inexpensive system that has a lot of features. It will allow you to monitor the doors and windows while you are at home/sleep and a activate all sensor setting which includes IR sensors when you are away. The features and the low cost for extra sensing devices makes this a good system. I would recommend it.

Belkin Wireless G 4-Port Router Review

Belkin Wireless G 4-Port Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I set this wireless router up for my non-techy parents around Thanksgiving. The setup was probably about half-an hour if you're overly-thorough like me with wanting to check everything out. After the initial setup, the 'rents have not had a bit of trouble connecting wirelessly. I noticed another review (and a comment) mention not being able to make changes to the settings. I didn't experience any of their woes. However, I do remember logging in to the router not being very intuitive and I wonder if that could be causing the issues. I was able to change the default SSID, login password for the router, and setup WPA easily. I set everything up by connecting my laptop directly with an ethernet cord and going to the router's IP address. I didn't use the included software, so I have no idea how well that works. As far as speed goes, I can't tell a difference between this cheapy router and my nice expensive one at home. My parents are only using it for browsing/email, and since they just upgraded from dial-up, they feel like they are flying.

***Update 01/20/09
I just wanted to state that my positive review of this product was not paid for, in light of Belkin's recent pay for reviews scandal (65 cents not really worth my integrity). And my parents still haven't had any problems with this router.

I bought this camera to view activities in a datacenter. While the packaging specified compatibility with various Windows platforms it did not make it clear that the image can ONLY BE VIEWED FROM WINDOWS PLATFORMS USING IE. So, the center managers Solaris box could not view the image and my MacOS X workstation could not view the image. When I viewed the image from a Win2000 box the quality was horrible, very grainy even in a well lit area. I have ended up connecting an Apple iSight to one of the rackmounted XServes in the center and using getting a much higher quality image for considerably less money. I really expected better of Linksys. One star is being kind.

Product Description:
Unlike standard web cams, that are anchored to a PC, the Linksys WVC11BWireless-B Internet video camera has its own web server. It can connect directly to a computer network over a Wireless-B (802.11b) connection or via a 10/100 Ethernet cable. From there, it provides MPEG-4 video compression for a 320x240 video stream that can be sent to a web browser anywhere in the world. It also works well as a monitoring or security device to keep an eye on your home, kids, workplace or just see whether the squirrels are getting into your birdfeeder. Other features include time stamp and text overlay, the ability to connect up to 4 users simultaneously, multi-platform support--TCP/IP, SMTP (e-mail), HTTP, and DHCP .
Of course, the video stream itself is secure behind your router, but you can always open an appropriate port on the router and use the SoloLink DDNS (a trial version is included with the camera) to give password-enabled users access to the camera, or simply leave it unsecured and open for public use. Additional security features include WEP encryption up to 128-bit.
There's also a Security Mode feature that sends an email with a video attached whenever its motion detector senses something in the line of vision. Then you can capture the images onto your hard drive. The camera is wall-mountable or can be attached to its stand for desktop use. Its Windows-based setup wizard makes get ting started easy as well. The unit measures 3.35 x 6.10 x 3.15 inches and weighs just over a half pound.

See a comparison diagram of the different wireless technologies.

Wireless networks are rapidly becoming more popular and coming down in price. Since they don't require cables, you can use the devices anywhere in an office or home, even out on the patio. There's no need to roll out an Ethernet network cable to each room of a house; you can network anywhere -- without wires. Outside of the home, wireless networking is available in hotspots at coffee shops, businesses, airports -- great when you're on the road and need to get some work done. For convenience, wireless networking is the answer.

What Wireless Standard is Right for Me?
Now that you've decided to create a wireless network, the next step is to figure out which wireless standard to use.

Basically, a standard is a set of specifications for a device. All devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as the radio frequency used and maximum data transfer speed.

For wireless networking, there are three standards to choose from at this time:

    802.11b
    802.11a
    802.11g

I just purchased this unit and once I finally got it working I could not be more pleased. Just be warned that it was not as easy in my two story home to just plug one in upstairs and come downstairs with the other and have it work right away. Maybe I just have some "funky" wiring in this house, BUT I had to make about 6 trips up and down those stairs with a friend standing by the unit I wanted in the master bedroom while I tried various plugs upstairs until we finally got the things to work. All the electrical receptacles work fine, so I don't know why it did not work on the first try. Once working they are great...just keep in mind flexibility of placement in the event you have an experience similar to mine. I'm going to order another set to use between the den and my husband's workshop and feel they are a great deal for the cost and so much easier than a "hard wired" system.

Surprisingly versatile little unit. From ~4 weeks of use, everything seems to be working as advertised. The network and DDNS services seem to work well although installation across a wireless LAN was not for the faint of heart.(Hint - to use the client viewer within your LAN, use your internal IP address, not your DDNS.)I had to figure out port forwarding and related issues on my own, as I never did get a response from "customer service."Picture resolution (esp. IR) is a little grainy but within tolerance. The network client / viewer is a little simplistic and could use an upgrade. The software interface with the DVR is very elementary and could use a major upgrade, but again, within tolerance.I would probably buy it again.Overall I would give this unit a solid B, but I would give Lorex customer service a failing grade.

Cisco-Linksys WVC54GC Wireless-G Internet Video Camera Review

Cisco-Linksys WVC54GC Wireless-G Internet Video Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With a long history of many failed attempts at IP wireless cams, Linksys creates what others could not; one that works.

Configuration with WEP was pretty easy. It's a little temperamental with distance compared to the tolerances of other G devices, but it works. It does not react well to low light levels and tries to compensate via its own gain. If you are using this in a home without AMPLE light, expect a grainy picture.

Frame rate is about 20FPS and is annoying. The security feature works. It senses movement and mails a captured video file. With only 4 seconds at the medium setting, the video images were over 500Kb. This is not for a dial-up AOL user.

There is a remote viewing option that lets you use their web servers to hit your cam from anywhere. Of course expect to pay about $40 for two years access.

This product is not 802.3af PoE compliant. That means you must use the included terminal unit with the included base unit.If you get a PoE switch later on it will not work with the terminal unit. Why they did it that way, heaven knows.Given that, you might as well hack splitters on both ends yourself and save some money. No electronics would be involved just wiring in the AC adapter at the base end and wiring in the connector at the terminal end using the unused cat5 pair. With a long cable run the device might not work but you've got nothing to lose.

I purchased this device to connect my Samsung BlueRay 1600 player to my internet. I tried the Samsung Linkstik, but due to the position in my house and the inflexibility of the Linkstik, my connection kept dropping.I connected the Cisco bridge via a wireless connection to my NetGear 300n router and presto, no problems and downloaded movies began immediately from Netflix.

My only reason for the downgrade from 5 to 4 is that none of the documentation that I saw stated that it could only run one device through the bridge.I find that to be rather ridiculous for the price. At least two to four ethernet connections should have been enabled for $95.So my downgrade is related to the price for function rather than anything wrong with the device.

Average Reviews:

I bought the WET610N for my Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-Ray Player. My options were either wired, which I didn't want to do, or buy a proprietary dongle from Samsung. I chose the option that Samsung did not mention - I bought the WET610N! The unit was easy to setup, and the instructions were clear. I've never been fond of using Linksys CD's to setup this kind of equipment, but I have to say it was painless and quick compared to some others I've seen. The value of this unit is simply that it will work with ANYTHING that wants a "wired" network connection. So, it doesn't matter if it's a video game system, a DVR type device, or as in this case a blu-ray DVD Player. For this reason, the unit is a great value and will be in use for a long time, even when the current equipment I am using it with now is long gone.

After my sister's house was burglarized, I got her three of these fake security cameras and I ordered 2 for myself. They look just like the real ones on the house next door to me.A friend of my sister's asked me if it had a red LED (to look "more real.")I said No and that's why I chose them.I see VERY few red operating lights on home security cameras these days.Besides, you don't want the criminals seeing you up on a ladder replacing the batteries on your fake cameras, do you?I also purchased a sign from a local sign shop reading, "WARNING!Property under video surveillance."The cherry on top of our charade...

The only downside is the small black wire coming out the back. There is nowhere to put the other end.You could tuck it under the base when you install the camera, but I thought that looked pretty amateur, so I just cut the little wire off at the rear of the camera. This is really just a psychological ploy, anyway. If the average burglar sees mounted cameras and warning stickers on your windows, his first, easiest course is to find an easier house to break into.Sure, a determined thief will break in anyway, but this is a great, first line of defense against the more common lower level, crime-of-opportunity type thieves.

If you can't afford a full-on, real video monitoring system, this is a great alternative.I see home security system cameras on MANY homes and you will blend right in with these. It's the cheapest insurance you will ever get!
