I bought two of these to use in my existing surveillance system. I needed separate base stations so I could have a full video image in each of two channels on my existing dvr/multiplexer.

It is true that they are very easy to set up, and that the level of interference on the wireless signal is near zero when you have high enough signal strength.

Unfortunately, I ended up RMA'ing both cameras for different reasons because I waited too long to return them for my money back. I will probably end up trying to sell these on ebay or something.

Camera A Problems:
1. Only displays in BW
2. Video is out of alignment. It has a thick black border on the sides and top of the frame.
3. When the light level drops, the IR never comes on.
Troubleshooting attempted: Switching power supplies has no affect on the problem.

Camera B Problems:
1. When it switches to dark mode, the video brightness constantly pulses, causing the DVR motion sensor to think there is motion all night long.
2. Radio signal strength dropped off dramatically in the first week or two. Whereas it originally connected to the base station with only occasional signal drops, it now must be very close to the base station to work (right next to it).
Troubleshooting attempted: I tried moving the base station much closer to the install location, and Camera B still cannot connect until it is only a few feet away. If I take Camera A to the Camera B install location, Camera A easily connects to it's base station, despite being much farther away.

In a perhaps unrelated, I have had some trouble getting both base stations to maintain a signal with their respective camera when the other one is closer to the base stations. It doesn't seem to matter which, but the pair that is closer together seems to cause the other pair to drop in and out quite a bit.

Regarding wireless video in general:
This is no fault of the unit in particular; I have changed my mind about the value of using wireless, regardless of quality, because it's a pain to get power to the camera location anyway, so you might as well just use an AV Extension cord that runs low voltage, video and audio to your mounting spot. It's not that much additional trouble, relative to just getting power there, and then you have no issues with wireless signal, etc.

Regarding infrared illumination in general:
I have also concluded that you are far better off with extreme low lux bullet cams and skip the infrared illumination. Look for a hard-wire camera that can record at something like .008 lux or lower, you will be much more satisfied.

(More customer reviews)I like the ease of set up, the video quality; however it does not work consistently and I find this frustrating.I can not make sense of when it works and when it doesn't.I don't know if it's because my home's wiring is older or if the product is faulty.When it is working - it is great.Another thing to be aware of is that it's very tedious to get rid of video footage that you no longer want.Each tiny segment has to be deleted one piece at a time.I haven't found a way to delete large chunks of time; such as deleting one day.

I just followed the quick installation guide, plugged in ethernet cable and the power, set the ip as recommended 192.168.0.20 on the camera and my wireless Netgear router and it works. I can view the camera immediately. But when I unplug the ethernet and into wireless mode, it didn't work. I ended up calling tech support and got a live support person in less than 5 minutes, he suggested I reboot(power down and up) my camera and router. The wireless mode now working.
I tried to set the camera up behind the router according to the instruction on the manual from the CD provided, it didn't work. After playing around for 3 hours, I finally figured out that the default port 80 and 8481 don't work, you have to open up the second port 81 and 8482. I IPView software provided in the CD does not have motion sensor, you can download the latest version of IPView with motion sensor for the DLINK website, and it works very well. It can detect a slightest movement.
PROS: price, good picture(can adjust brightness), motion sensor software(download latest IPView).
CONS: no audio, can not pan view(must manually pan camera), no email picture option.

(More customer reviews)The Defender SN301-8CH like the average security camera system that sells to the general public averages in resolution around 420 TV lines which is barely enough to clearly identify anybody over 10 ft. Therefore if you ever catch a criminal on camera beyond that range and you want to press charges, I found it useless to use that in court. If you are looking for good image with longer range you have to start at least with a resolution of 550 TV lines per camera which could bring the price for a 8 channel system to over $1200. Other than that system serves the purpose of monitoring your propertyand the software is very user friendly.

I searched around for a fairly decent surveilance system with a limited budget.I thought this was it.But, I soon discovered not everything is what it's cut out to be. When I received this system, I read over the box, before opening it to see if everything matched the description on Amazon.com. It looked good, then I opened the box and soon began to be disappointed. The packaging looks great, everything nice and clean, but I soon discovered the camera base & mount bracket were not the same as that pictured with the description!Then I started reading the manuals and looking at schematics provided, to find that the description is misleading in its portrail of what this system can do and how it does it, and customer service from the manufacturer is extremely disappointing. The company that provides this product has poor customer service, the sales staff does not know what they are doing or saying.The technical support is non-existent...you get a message to leave a call back number--they'll get in touch with you!????What kind of technical support is that?If you do get lucky to talk with a tech, you quickly learn you made a bad choice--at least I did!
This 8-channel system only records in CIF--but you don't know that until you get the package!It boasts a Sony CCT camera, but it is only a analog camera with a Sony chip inside--no way to know for sure.The camera mounting bracket and base are cheap...it's not adjustable like shown in the description--it's a 5" tube with a base; and the length of the camera cables is shorter that the length of the mounting bracket with base, thus leaving the BNC connecters exposed and vulnerable to theft or disconnect/damage by any intruder.This system may be what others tout it to be, but my experience has been terrible and I would not recommend this item to anyone!Sorry Amazon.com, but this item did not live up to your reputation!

(More customer reviews)I purchased this unit mostly because of the wide angle and the high res features.I'm using it to monitor my driveway and it's doing just the job I hoped it would do.It does a fair job with IR, and very clear picture.Will likely buy another one for another use.Note that it does not come with long wires.The power supply is about 5' and that's it.Likely you'll need to explore some kind of cord to get the video output where you need it.I'm only rating it as four stars because I've not used it long enough to rate it higher...so far, so good.

(More customer reviews)The Defender SN502-4Ch-002 is my first DVR system and for what it has should be my last.It stores a months worth of video and the video is surprisingly good. On a 55" tv the quality isn't much worse than what regular cable, using only the coax cable, would be. The color quality is great.As far as the night vision I'm very surprise on how well the night vision video. Sometimes I just like to turn to the dvr's channel to see if the pesky neighborhood cats are around.I've see a few good cat fights with it, oh and you have instant replay!!! I hope this video helps. Make sure you get to the end to see video samples.

(More customer reviews)I purchases this for the sole purpose of residential security. Amazon did a great job at getting the product to me extremely quickly. The setup for this system is really simple based on the fact of siamese cable (BNC & power) being bundled with the package. In other words you have everything you need to get going. However after everything was setup was where I started to see issues. The main problems I experienced were:

1) Cam resolution is very low
2) DVR kept shutting down without warning or reason
3) DVR resolution is low (352x which is then interpolated to full screen)
4) 2 cameras died after a day or two

Needless to say you unfortunately seem to get what you pay for. To put it in perspective a full D1 (720x resolution) DVR would set you back at least $500 by itself with individual cameras (decent quality like CNB etc) being $200 each plus cables etc. So with that said as long as you don't expect high quality capture, great night vision then you may be okay with this. Similarly you can always by this as a starter set then switch out the cams however my major concerns were with the quality of the product after some of the issues seen which is what forced me to return this (bad DVR and 2 cams).

Would recommend looking elsewhere unless your needs are very basic.

Also of note finally is the Mobile Phone view and remote view. You can watch the cams remotely via iPhone as long as you use a 3rd party Apple Store App and have remote access to your DVR (use Dynamic DNS to set this up). For remote view (using an Internet browser) you must have one that supports ActiveX so anyone using a MAC you will either need you use Parallels or Fusion with Windows and IE or move to a PC to accomplish this.

(More customer reviews)Overall, this is a great system. I was impressed with the reception and the graphics. That being said, I had to return it for two reasons. 1) The system did not come with a remote control. I called Lorex customer service and they can easily take care of that. 2) Although the system is described as an indoor/outdoor system, it is NOT weatherproof. I always thought that if a surveillance system was outdoor, it could withstand the weather. When I called customer service about this, they pointed out that the lens cannot get wet, otherwise it may not work correctly. In addition, there can be no moisture allowed into the system itself. I only discovered this after hooking up the system.
Just keep in mind that although it is a good sytem, it is NOT waterproof.

. I have installed the program, unlocked the lock in the set-up menu and unchecked/enabled all the boxes including the 4 camera switches but still no images appear!
. When I connect cameras directly to TV using the AV channel as when you connect a DVD player, the images appear very clear meaning there is a problem with my DVR connection/setting or the cameras are not compatible with the USB DVR provided.
. Any assistance on what could be the problem is highly appreciated before I rate this product.

(More customer reviews)I replaced my 15 year old VCR based Black and White security system with the Defender SN-300 color Security system with 4 Nightvision cameras for my small retail business.In the past, it was difficult to see a small 9" quad screen in B/W.Now I have a 19" color monitor hooked to the Defender DVR and the difference is huge.I really like the ability to switch from quad view to one camera for monitoring and playback then back to quad again.The picture is not HD quality, but is VERY, VERY good and clear.The DVR in highest quality will record 7-10 days of monitoring only.I haven't tried the low quality setting, but I am sure the DVR would record much, much more with the 500GB drive in the low quality setting!The nightvision cameras are a must and light my office well for recording.That was a huge bonus.The setup is easy and the menus also are easy to use.The networking is a little more of a challenge, but am working through this for watching the store from home.All in all, you can't beat the system for the money.

(More customer reviews)I have had this camera for six weeks.It works when hardwired.I have had several emails from Ly Seang, the company trouble shooter.His replies are short, not specifically responsive to my clearly stated issues AND his replies have not helped.I have learned that this product cannot be managed except on some XP machines and it cannot be viewed except by Internet Explorer on some machines set up with restrictions.Therefore it is NOT a true IP Camera.I would have given it NO STARS if that had been an option.
