TRENDnet ProView Wireless Pan/Tilt/Zoom Internet Surveillance Camera TV-IP600W (White) Review

TRENDnet ProView Wireless Pan/Tilt/Zoom Internet Surveillance Camera TV-IP600W
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this camera based on assurances from TrendNet that it was fully Mac compatible. THAT IS NOT THE CASE.

#1, TrendNet does not provide any written instructions for using this camera with a Mac.
#2. If you figure it out on your own, then there are new problems...While you can sometimes view the camera in Safari, it is very difficult to administer the camera. Safari simply cannot display the web pages correctly. As for FireFox... it just crashes. (BTW: I am on 10.6.1 with the latest Safari and Fireox)

However, since they offer a Java option (in addition to Active-X) you can view video on browsers other than IE.So, you can view video on Safari. The camera does work with EVO-Cam... but, that costs $30 more.

Other than that, the camera has a decent picture, but the configuration options are really limited. There is no ability to add a date/time stamp to snapshots and the only way to do motion detection is through their Windows software product IPView PRO 2.0 (which, does not run on a Mac).

All-in-all, If I had known the true limitations of the camera, I would have bought something else.

Mi Casa Verde Vera 2 Home Controller Review

Mi Casa Verde Vera 2 Home Controller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are the type who can figure things out, you can get this working. However, if you want something you can setup and forget go get the Schlage Link or something.

I have the schlage locks and this programs the locks just fine, however it locked up while programming new codes and I rebooted it several times and did a repair. But the only thing that fixed the problem was removing the lock from the system and adding it back in.

The only way to put a password on it is through the website. However, then the website knows your password which, if it had a bad employee, could take the password and get into your house. Likely not going to happen, but I still think it's weird you can't put in a password yourself.

The unit comes with a rechargable battery pack so you can program your devices, however the batterypack doesn't power the unit for more than a minute, even after charging all night. I ended up just programming it using a nearby outlet.

The instructions aren't the best either, and there is a mysterious button on the back of the unit which is completely unlabelled or described. So like I said, if you like to tinker this thing is fine.

This is my first Trendnet purchase and it will be my last.I am not sure why they thought it was a good idea to include a camera that doesn't support sound in a package marketed for baby monitoring and security.Actually the camera was the best part of the package. The monitor was useless.Even after a firmware upgrade it was so slow and sluggish that is was unusable. The software setup was not intuitive at all.I finally got it on the wifi network but it would only take a snapshot of the camera and then lockup.I also found it odd that it was able to take a snapshot of the camera without ever entering the camera password which makes me think the camera wasn't very secure.I found another review online that noted the same problems with the M7 being unresponsive.I am not sure how a company can release such garbage on consumers.

SecurityMan 4 Channel Triplex Network DVR with 250GB USB Motion Detection (NDVR0400) Review

SecurityMan 4 Channel Triplex Network DVR with 250GB USB Motion Detection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is more a review of my experience with SecurityMan customer service, not this specific DVR. My model is the DVR-04.

I called today to order another power supply, and that's when I learned the DVR-04 had been discontinued. The person on the other end of the phone put me on hold to see if they had a power supply for it. After a couple minutes, he returned and said they'd have to look "in the warehouse" and call me back.

I asked two things; how long has this model been discontinued, and, how long until they'd get back to me after they check the warehouse?

Reasonable questions, right? Not so the answers:
I was informed the SecurityMan DVR-04 had been discontinued about a year ago, which means someone who bought one just about the time it was discontinued may very well not be able to get replacement parts after only one year. (And this is the *second* time in probably a year that my power supply has died.)

Granted, my unit is around 3 years or so old, but the point is that even someone who bought this model new just 12 months ago and has a problem with it, may have more of a problem than they may think! What's reasonable here? Should SecurityMan regard what they sell as simply disposable equipment, even if it fails only 365 days after purchase? I can get parts for my 6+ year old 52" Philips TV right now, but SecurityMan feels no obligation to stock parts even one year after discontinuance? (And this power supply seems to be unique, so you can't just pick one up anywhere.)

As to when they'd get back to me about the power supply, I was told "I don't know--no time frame". No time frame???? In other words, "Take a flying leap, my friend, we've moved on. Your problems with our old equipment mean nothing to us".

OK, everyone who thinks either one of these answers equates with even minimally acceptable customer service from SecurityMan, raise your hands!

Defender STEALTH1EX Recording System 2 Covert MPEG4 DVRs with Built-in Color Pinhole Surveillance Camera (White) Review

Defender STEALTH1EX Recording System 2 Covert MPEG4 DVRs with Built-in Color Pinhole Surveillance Camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like my title says the best way to rate this camera would be an average home monitoring. And here is why. It's about the size of man's palm, not very stealthy, but it does look like regular motion detector. Battery operation could be a big plus, but lithium batteries only lasted half a day on motion sensing recording, it could last longer if that would be continuous recording, I think. So the fact that you have to keep it plugged-in in an outlet, and the cord is not very long really doesn't help. Also forget about low light recording, it's not existent. Lastly it could be just minor thing for somebody, but field of view it's only about 50 degrees.

4 Channel USB 2.0 DVR for PC Notebook Digital Video Security System 1OZ Review

4 Channel USB 2.0 DVR for PC Notebook Digital Video Security System 1OZ
Average Reviews:

First of all, don't use the included CD. I think they included the wrong driver, and I emailed VideoSecu about it and they sent a link with the updated software. Here is the url to the software:
[...].

EDIT: It looks like it blocks external links (and it won't let me put it in my profile), so email me for the correct one.

EDIT 2: You cannot get remote monitoring on smart phones with this model. Instead, you have to get the PCI DVR from Q-See: Q-See QSDT4PCRC 4 Channel H.264 PCI DVR Card They said it works with Win Mobile Pro, Symbian OS and iPhones.

Once I installed that, it worked perfectly. The most awesome thing about it is you can control Pan/Tilt/Zoom functions and watch the live camera feed remotely. You can also download your recordings remotely (but be sure to use Internet Explorer, because the remote monitoring software requires ActiveX).

The motion detection and alarm features are also very nice. You can make it record when motion is detected so you don't have the scrub through hours of recording nothing. You can also make it email you when motion is detected, and it can even attach a snapshot of what set off the motion alarm.

The frame rate may stutter a lot when you are using more than two video inputs, but the recording quality is not affected. You also want to be sure that if your cameras are wireless that there is a clean signal with no interference or disturbances. Any bit of interference will set off the motion alarm, and it will record nothing interesting (unless you find static fascinating).

Another thing; the DVR software does NOT work on 64 bit systems (but the remote monitoring will).

Axis 214 Ptz Network Camera Pan Tilt Zoom Day/night 2 Way Audio Review

Axis 214 Ptz Network Camera Pan Tilt Zoom Day/night 2 Way Audio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First of all the following link provides a live demo of the camera:
[...]

The Amazon page appears to be missing some basic specs on the camera so let's get those out of the way.
-Maximum resolution 704x576, 30 fps in all resolutions
-zoom 18x optical
-Min. illuminationColor: 0.3lux B&W: 0.005 lux
-Video codecMPEG-4 part 2, Motion JPEG
-POENope
-Comes with:
Power supply, ceiling mount kit, Installation, CD with installation tools, recording software and User's Manual, Windows decoder 1-user license.

So let's start with probably the most important aspect of a security camera: image quality. This camera excels at that. Although it may not record at megapixel resolutions, the lens is of a high enough quality to produce clear images. Couple this with the 18x optical zoom, and you are able to peel the license plate off a car at quite a distance.
Notice the 0.005 B&W lux sensitivity (the smaller the number the better), this number is very important if you intend on using the camera to capture outdoor activity at night. Even at this sensitivity you are not going to get usable images in a poorly lit area. But if you throw a few lights out there and make sure they don't shine into the camera, you should be able to record something meaningful.
However, night time shots are difficult even for the best of security cameras. Don't expect that you will be able to clearly record detail of a fast moving object at night. Thus, if you are trying to record license plates, try to situate the camera so that vehicles will be driving directly towards it -- this should minimized the apparent movement.

Ptz functionality:
What can I say, it pans & scans quickly and quietly. You can set it to 20 preset positions, which you can flip through manually, or set the camera to automatically visit sequentially. When using the web interface, you can just click on whatever part of the image you want to focus on the and camera will figure out how to get there. If you want to zoom in on a specific area, then you just click and drag out a box, let go, and the camera will zoom in and pan appropriately.

More on the web interface:
It is slick and functional. The first page you see is the live demo page, which allows you to control all of the ptz functions, plus the iris size, and focus. You can set the presets, and all of the other typical settings (IP, time, video, audio, users). I've tried the interface in IE and Firefox and it appears to work perfectly in both.

Software:
I didn't try the Axis's software, I'm sure it is fine but it is also expensive. Instead, I opted for BlueIris. [...] software, and it does everything I need. It supports this camera, so you will be able to use the PTZ functions (although not quite as easily), and you will also be able to jump between preset locations.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a quality camera without going too high, this is a pretty safe bet.

IMHO this is a worthless piece of electronics. First it does not come with memory so you need to buy a microcard which is about $10-22 extra. The directions are almost wothless. It has a small DVD with alot of un-needed extras and a pain to find the actual manual which is all of 7 pages half of them warnings. As far as being a spy camera? What a joke!! When it is operating you have 4 blue lights flashing on the back. If you cover the lights with tape there is still a white plastic spacer all around the middle that flashes. You are not able to cover this up because the mic is built into this piece. It only works well in bright light and it does not record voices well as the lens faces forward and the mic faces up. Also it is not very Vista compatable.

I'm an IT guy and have tried several IP cam version and by far this is the BEST out there and cheap. It's super clear even at greater resolution. It's MP4 and 1024x768 resolution (XGA). MP4 is near HD quality. It won't be like blueray but hell way better than those early vga ipcam. You get free software to monitor up to 16 IPcam.IP cam means it is a camera that can network to your computer. It can network by wire or by wireless wifi 802.11b or g.The wifi can be wep, wpa-psk, or wpa2-psk.Best of all, it is both day color ip camera and night vision camera. Try to find one for around $100 with great quality at large resolution and networkable, and you won't find 1 anywhere.I'm swapping out all my old cam for these babies. The software has tons of features.I can record sound and use external trigger NC or NO.Man, this rocks by far!!!!!It also has motion detection and blocking. It also has trigger function and scheduling. It can push files out to a NAS (remote network disk). It doesn't have SSL but it does have ip filter so that can do.It is powered by long AC cable - thank god it does not use battery. It kick all other ipcam in the tutu.Love it!Pretty easy to install and tweaking to your liking. Its snapshot can be accessed by any standard program that can open JPG file and even web browser such as IE or Firefox. It uses activeX, thus is is best only with IE browser.Vendor has said they make it workable with other browser later on.But if you want to use it in Firefox, just install the add-on "IE Tab" in firefox and you'll be able to get this work inside it.No biggy. It beats Trendnet, D-Link, Linksys, Axis...IMHO.

Purchased system to catch neighbor's dog pooping on my lawn, looks like I'm not going to catch it with this system. Menu structure is arcane, related functions in are different branches (I design computer systems and would get fired for doing this bad a job on the user interface). User interface has quirks. Example, on the Schedule page, set the recording day for "All" and it keeps changing the indication back to a single day (although it does record every day). Manual is terse, some functions totally unexplained (what is the "Extra Stream" on the Encode page?). Printed manual screen shots are dingy and blurry, PDF not much better.Set to recording 4 hours each day for four days, first two days were strange-looking mangled pixelated images. Supplied CMOS camera image quality is poor. Should have taken a clue from the company's website FAQ that admits as much. Supplied playback/convert utility can't play faster than 2X on a 2.4 GHz Pentium. Used utility to convert to .AVI in hopes of getting faster playback, but Microsoft Media Player and Move Maker can't read the file. Camera noise triggers the motion detect so that's unusable. Tech support (e-mail) slow and unhelpful.

A simple and useful idea, but the image quality was not acceptable in our home.I tried a number of different electrical outlets and TVs, but none produced a clear enough image to be practical.
Also remember that this camera replaces a common floodlight. So, for the camera to be operational your floodlights need to be turned "on" to get an image. For us, this means that ALL the floodlight must be on to get an image because they are all on the same switch and go "on" and "off" together.
