Fellowes Powershred DS-1 Shredder (3011001) Review

(More customer reviews)I've had this shredder for 3 months and it has performed very well during that time up until I used for shredding a large volume of end-of-year papers that I no longer needed. The shredder simply stopped shredding. I had no hint that the end was near... The shredder green light comes on, the shredder motor still works in reverse mode, but does not accept paper from the top shred slot.

Other than that, a couple of things to consider before buying this model:

+ Looks great. The styling is great. It does not have the "heavy" industrial look of so many shredders.

+ Shreds credit cards easily. With all the credit card offers I get, this is a handy feature.

- For light shredding only. If you have a need for volume shred runs, I would look for a more capable machine (as I am right now).

- The basket needs to be properly seated or the shredder won't work. It's not obvious when the basket is not properly seated, so give it a jiggle if your shredder light isn't on.

! Be sure to unload the basket before it gets full near the top, or you'll be cleaning up confetti shred on the floor.

Summary: I liked the shredder quite a bit, but am disappointed that it has gone dark on me. I'll report back if I can get it to run again, or with the info of which shredder replaced this one.

Followup report:
I contacted Fellowes and they are replacing my DS-1. They said it cannot run for more than 5 minutes without cooling down or the controller card will burn out due to overload.

I told them they need to do a better job of advising consumers that this 5 minute limit is critical. Their response is that this is covered in the manual. As far as I'm concerned, this is a machine that I would not "need" to read a manual on so it would be better if Fellowes had some warning on the unit itself.

Followup summary:
Fellowes customer service couldn't be better, they are coming through to replace the unit, not repair it, completely new unit being shipped to me.

But, given my shredding needs, I've ordered from Amazon the Fellowes Powershred PS-77Cs. I'll follow up with a review after I've had a chance to use it a while (and give the DS-1 to my sister).

(More customer reviews)Looks nicer than our old white ones BUT has same hum on 3 of the 4 channels. As it so happens, the voice activated claim is misleading or so I thought. I had believed that you could activate it via voice and another one could respond same way. Nope! You basically set one up as a "monitor" and it will broadcast to remaining units and they can't respond since the "voice activated" one is set to always be activated in "send" mode. Also, units did not work when plugged in to voltage suppressor and my neighbors could hear me on their old Radio Shack units. I sent them back. Not as promised at all. No privacy.

(More customer reviews)I have an 800' driveway with a small rise in the middle. The receiver could not pick up the signal from the transmitter until it had a clear line of site with the house.

The system does not put out a very loud or long buzz when an object is detected. An external signaling device, such as your doorbell chime, can be connected to it, but since the base unit requires an outlet it make this a bit difficult. Without the external device you may (probably) not here the signal in another room, especially if you have the radio on (I have not on multiple occasions).

The system has not totally ignored animals. I installed the sensor at the specified height above the ground but it did signal activity a couple of times at night (that I know of) that I think were from the passage of deer.

(More customer reviews)I bought 3 Gateway notebooks for myself and my family a short while ago, because they all had copious storage space and were well-priced. BIG MISTAKE.They ALL had problems within 2 months.Seriously.

This one, exactly a month in, just died.Had a blue screen, then black screen, then I couldn't get pass the setup screen.I was very carefuly with installing software, and didn't knock or drop the machine.No internal or external stimulus, it didn't occur when I tried to startup, I was in the middle of using it and BLINK!, it just died.I'ver never seen that on a computer.

So I had to send it in, and it takes a month for them to "fix" and then send my laptop back to me, so I'm withouta computer for a month.All my data is erased, even though the problem was hardware (the "SATA pins were loose") and they give no explanation what was wrong with it or what they fixed, none whatsoever.I have to log onto online chat THREE TIMES just to get this info, and they just tell me briefly that the "SATA pins were loose".I asked for documentation but they wouldn't or couldn't give me it.

My laptop doesn't appear to be fully fixed.When I start it, I get an error message saying "media test failure" and saying the cables are loose.When I asked Gateway about this they said "oh, we don't fix the products, we have someone else do it" and then told me to send it back in. Yeah, like I can afford to do without a computer for an entire month again to "fix" a problem that most likely will not be fixed, not to mention have my data erased, as well.

Also, like EVERY one of the Gateway laptops I bought, the lid sticked -- meaning that if you try to adjust it, you have to use 2 hands or else the whole laptop will raise off the surface and will hit the surface when you release it.I specically asked them to fix this and they did not.

Luckily, I backed up the very very important document I was working on or else it would have been an utter disaster.As is, I was deprived of my laptop for a whole month, and still am nervous that this piece of junk will malfunction at a whim.

In terms of performance, it's not bad, a bit slow and the speakers are horrible, but otherwise it's what I expected.But believe me, it's not worth the price.

Avoid this product, and this company, at all costs.

(More customer reviews)I have had my new XPS 1640 for about three weeks.I initially had to exchange it for another one because of a couple of minor issues (1) the A/C plug did not fit very securely into the opening and constantly loosened up (2) the side endcap on the hinge came loose and created a space, not affecting the function, but not looking very good for a brand new computer, and (3) the machine would heat up so much after using continuously for over an hour that I could barely touch the keypad, and could feel significant heat even through a plastic cutting board that I had bought for it to use as a base on my lap.I now realize after receiving the exchange that this XPS Studio simply runs hot, which I had heard was common with many of the newer laptops/notebooks, but didn't realize it would be so hot as to be uncomfortable to touch or have on your lap.The A/C adapter unit is also extremely hot at times....I could not hold it in my hand.I think part of the problem may be the backlit keyboard (which I now don't know how I ever lived without). I've never had this feature before so don't have anything to compare to but it makes sense that this could be creating some extra heat.

I got the basic P7350 2GHz 3MB cache processor and 4GB RAM, but upgraded the video card to the 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD4670. and the display to the FHD 1080P (1920x1080) WLED LCD and it is stunning, well worth the $100 to upgrade the display.I am also very pleased with the look of the computer, all black and shiny both inside and out, very attractive, and even better with the keypad lit.The blue strip of light around the end of the A/C adapter plug is a nice touch also.

It came with a 500GB 7200 RPM Free Fall Sensor Seagate hard drive which was another selling point for me.

It does not feel as heavy as I expected an almost 16" to be.I very much like the seamless CD/DVD slot, no drawer to open and the eject button on the top of the keyboard right where it should be.The keyboard controls are very intuitive with excellent placement in my opinion, and no need to use Function key for some controls, like print screen for screenshots.

I did not upgrade the battery and the basic 56 WHr 6-cell does not last very long, even with the brightness set to only 25%, maybe 1 1/2hrs.That's another thing about the display....it is so brilliantly bright that setting it at half is still sufficiently bright.I also did not upgrade the sound, it has integrated high definition audio 2.2 with good sized speakers on either side and I found the sound to be adequate.I will not be using this computer much for music so it was not important to me.

I wasn't too happy about getting a Vista operating system, and almost passed up the XPS Studio to get a Dell that had the XP option, but I ended up doing it because of the free Windows 7 upgrade, and the lack of my desired upgrade options on other systems.

That's all I can think of for now; I will update after longer term usage.For now I highly recommend it even with its too hot little body!

Update:
After a few months of use I have some additional comments:

--- Yes, the sleek glossy black look is very cool but does not stay that way very long.It has made me realize how much dust there really is in the air, and you can see every speck on the computer, all the time, which of course prompts me to wipe it off, leading to a kind of OCD behavior!The outside cover also has the glossy finish and fingerprints are not easily wiped off like the dust....you have to use some pressure and rub a bit.Any laptop I purchase in the future will have a matte finish!

--- The battery has improved...can now get 2+hrs out of it.

--- The heat generated from the computer continues to be somewhat of a problem but since the weather has cooled off it is not as uncomfortable.I'm still using the plastic cutting board underneath and then a towel under that for when I use it on my lap which is most of the time.I think I will end up buying one of those laptop bases with the pillow attached underneath, which I made fun of to no end when my son purchased one, I thought it was so silly and dorky.I would buy one of the bases they sell that have the built-in fan but that would be awkward to use on your lap.I'm hoping that this system will hold up long term with the constant exposure to this much heat.

Only after going to the SecurityMan website and contacting their support for assistance did I find out that this will not support any 64 bit OS and they have not intention to update the software for this unit. D-Link Wireless Internet Camera DCS-G900 Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the DCS-G900 in August and it works as advertised. It can be accessed and administered with just your web browser (type the camera's IP address into the address bar), or you can use the IPView Lite SE that comes with the camera to gain some extra features like Motion Detection, multiple camera control (up to 4) within the same IPView window and the ability to rotate the image 90 degrees (the internal camera settings will allow you to only mirror and\or flip the image, not turn it 90 degrees).

The max resolution is 640x480 (300K pixels), so it's not the same quality as a mega-pixel digital camera, but I have it trained on the front door at my place of business and I can recognize the people coming and going.

I tested the email feature and it works great.Enter the same credentials you use to log into your regular ISP mailbox, enter a recipient's address and you're off and running.

I installed the IPView software specifically for the Motion Detection feature.The camera is still always on and displaying a live picture, but when motion detection is enabled, it also automatically starts/stops recording any activity causing change in the camera's image.The amount of change in the image required to activate the recording is adjustable using a SENSITIVITY slider.The downside to that is now I need a computer up and running just to host IPView and provide storage space for the recordings....They could have built the motion detection functionality into the camera, but then you'd still need storage space for the recordings and we'd probably being paying more for the camera.

The Power and Link LED lights can be set to NORMAL, so folks can see the thing is actively working, or OFF, so it doesn't grab anyone's attention, or DUMMY, which makes them blink randomly so people can't tell if they're being seen or not.

I too initially had a problem getting the camera to locate my wireless network but it wasn't the camera's fault.Like any good network administrator, I disabled my wireless router's ability to broadcast my network's SSID (name), which effectively means there was no network name for the camera to find.If you momentarily enable the SSID broadcast on your wireless router, your camera should be able to find the network and complete the handshake.Once your camera has made the connection, you can once again disable the SSID broadcast and leave it disabled (until you want to connect another device).

I haven't used the FTP feature, but if it works as well as the email feature, you should be happy with the result.

I can't speak about the quality of customer service, as there was no need for it.

For the price and quality of this camera, you can't go wrong!!

(More customer reviews)I needed to replace my d-link wireless router after 7 years of admirable service and I noticed this Belkin router was on the cheap.Cheap doesn't necessarily mean good in this case though.This Belkin router drops the Internet connection every 10-20 minutes even though the cable modem is always working properly.After 4 support calls with Belkin and 2 with my cable provider, I rebooted the modem/router (multiple times), reinstalled the firmware, disabled all security, cloned MAC addresses, performed an exorcism (j/k) and I still couldn't resolve the problem.Both Belkin and my cable provider mentioned there's nothing else we could do, so time to shop for another router...

But the installation to the front reverse light power line requires a lot of skill and knowledge to your car's wiring system. alls in the manufacture installation instruction was "connect the blue line to the reverse power line, red wire to the 12V power line.....". I contact Boyo for tech support, all I was told was that "this is meant for professional installers". I didn't want to screw up my car, so i paid $100 to have it installed (I want to add that I have installed numerous radios and subs to my previous cars and didn't have much problem). - good product over all. But if you are not too good with all those wires in your car and you plan to DIY, you really have to think about it twice.

(More customer reviews)The recorder works well all features pretty much as advertised. Motion detection recording is great. The event log or date time range box to find past events took a little getting used to vs. just a vcr screen type scroll back thru old recording date and times. But it makes sense after some use.During playback its odd if you are in 4 camera screen or one camer view and the camere that had recorded activity reaches the end of its recording fo rthat period the view goes back to all 8 cameras, so you have to reselect one or 4 camer view when playback for the desired camera resumes would rather have a blank screen and the time counter continue running or skip to the next recording event for the selected camera.
The remote web viewing is really quirky, IE7 blows up at some point almost everytime I am viewing remotely.On my laptop the remote screen does not always size correctly so the controls on the bottom are cutoff no scroll to get to them, and the "power" button is cutoff so task manager is the only way to end a session.On my local network desktop the screen size is ok and it blows up less often. Configuration should have an option to not require a password to close the remote viewing session, its just annowing to enter a password to quit remote viewing every time.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this system to monitor my infant in a crib and my 2 year oldin a toddler bed.
Both share a bedroom.
With this cam I can pan back and forth between the two sleeping kids (from far away) to check on them from anywhere in the house.
The night vision capability is the most crisp and clear of any system I've owned.
I've had Safety 1st, Summer Infant and Sylvania baby monitors prior.
All were only available in black and white resolution and were not portable monitors.
The Safety 1st($200) and Summer($100) monitors blew out in less than a year.
The Sylvania still works, but lacked picture clarity at night and sometimes would transmit an annoying clicking sound due to mystery interference.
I have never written an online review before, but was compelled to write this one.
I had one small problem with the unit and 4uCam called me to rectify it immediately (while they were on vacation!)
I highly recommend this camera system, and suggest that you get the rechargeable battery pack and the AC adapter so you can plug it in or roam with it without having the power dwindle out.
Any interference is always made worse by weak batteries.

(More customer reviews)I bought this camera after the transmitter in one of D-Link DCS-900W wireless cameras died finally.

The TV-IP100W seems to have very similar if not identical hardware as the D-Link DCS-900W with a few added features such as picture email and FTP.

The TV-IP100W was very easy to configure and I got it up and running in just a few minutes.It seems that TrendNet has done a better job with the hardware and software design than D-Link.

The web interface of the TV-IP100W looks very similiar to its D-Link cousin and it works the same with the open source "motion" software.

Image quality is as good if not a little better than the D-Link model.

The lens of the TV-IP100W seems to be more susceptible to glare from light sources that are near the field of view.I may have to rig up some sort of cowling to keep the glare from my front porch light from interfering with the picture.

I bought this camera instead of another D-Link DCS-900W because I was tired of the finicky nature of the D-Link DCS-900W.So far it seems to be of similar if not better reliability.

The last word is that it doesn't look silly like the DCS-900W.The TV-IP100W actually looks like a camera and will probably fit in camera housing much easier than the D-Link model

(More customer reviews)Very funny LaCie, the drive only allows you to access 500 GB via USB, funny such a detail would be left out like that when it is advertised as a 4TB network/USB drive in the same sentence. The actual drive capacity is only 3.5 TB not 4. Why even list it as a 4TB device when that number is completely useless? I mean were missing 500GB here! that's alot of space! It's not a 4TB drive! And no it does not count towards the USB partition. Adding the USB partition makes the network partition 3TB. It's like advertising a V8 sports car when only 6 cylinders work.
