This was my first camera for home surveillance. This product is very east to setup.Viewing while connected to the local network provides fairly smooth motion and sound quality. The web based application for remote viewing is more jumpy but still serves the purpose.

Westinghouse WHDBI-5C Whole-House Wireless Doorbell and Intercom Review

Westinghouse WHDBI-5C Whole-House Wireless Doorbell and Intercom
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this wireless doorbell & intercom with expectations that it would replace the existing hard wired intercom/doorbell system that I have attached to my security system.
This item is nothing more than a glorified walkie talkie -- it even squelches like a walkie talkie. When you push on the doorbell, the microphone is activated and the chime noise originates from the doorbell module. The receiving intercom module receives the "Ding Dong" sound. How cheap!
Almost laffable is the fact that you can't put the doorbell outside where it might get wet.According to the instructions, the doorbell module should be kept in a place where there is not excessive sunlight or moisture.ARE YOU KIDDING ME?I called Westinghouse to confirm that it wasn't a typo -- to which I received a recommendation to buy a clear plastic box to keep it in outside OR -- get this.... put it in a bird house with the button where the bird would enter!HAHAHA. I swear..that's what the operator said.
Save yourself the $$$...

Wireless Wifi Pan Tilt IP Camera IR Night Vision 30 FPS
Average Reviews:

I bought this camera as it appeared very similar to the Trendnet IP422W.Unfortunately, there are a couple of drawbacks:

1) When connected to the network, there is a white LED on the front that continuously flashes, and there is no way to shut it off

2) Alarm events that trigger writing a video record to disk require a PC to be running firmware on it, and connected to the camera in order for this to occur.Autonomous operation writing events to a network drive are not possible.

Incidentally, this camera appears to be a BA-J011 made by BND Creative in Shenzhen[...]

Panasonic BLMS103A Network Camera Bundle Review

Panasonic BLMS103A Network Camera Bundle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can monitor and control the camera's from anywhere in the world using the internet, as well as monitor and control the camera's on my tv.The keyword here is MONITOR.These Panasonic camera's are basically webcams, and should NEVER be compared to a professional grade CCTV security camera system.Even their own website refers to them as "pet cams".

I previously purchased a single BL-C30A camera that worked so well that I needed more for other areas of the house. The BL-MS103-PK ($500 less than the MS103-A version) fit the bill, plus I could connect and control each camera from my TV.The BL-MS103-PK comes with 3 BLC30A cameras, and a BL-WV10A monitoring unit (the part that connects to the tv).

Pros: Panasonic provided DDNS service ([...] which allows for internet viewing from anywhere in the world (apparently you can can also view from your pda and/or cell phone too, but I haven't tried). You can even Pan and Tilt the camera (and digital zoom) over the internet for versatility.

Cons:Cumbersome setup, but not much more complicated than setting up any other wireless peripheral.I used software version 1.23, but I saw they have 1.30 on the Panasonic website.I don`t know if that would have made it easier.I'd rate the difficulty of setting up the camera's as a 7 (10 being most difficult) for the first camera, and 1 for all camera's after it.

Generally I don't agree with the other 3 reviews on the BL-MS103-A.Trying to use a webcam as a security system is just foolish.Unable to view 3 cams on one page?I can view all 4 of my cams on one page, and if I had 12 cams, I could watch all 12 at once!To get a better idea of the review ratings, look at the reviews for the BL-C30A camera. This is the real meat of this kit.

MOBI MobiCam System Review

MOBI MobiCam System

I was really looking forward to having a monitor so I could see my son at night. When I started using it the monitor had lines running through the picture and I couldn't hear anything. The manufacturer said that it doesn't work when you have a wireless network.I was really disappointed so I sent it back.I bought the Handheld Color Video Monitor by Summer Infant. It works great with my wireless network and my 2.4 Ghz phones. It doesn't work very good with other 900Mhz phones or controls according to the manual.

Click Here to see more reviews about: MOBI MobiCam System

Product Description:
The MOBI technologies 70001 MobiCam Wireless System is a simple, reliable, and highly economical solution for any basic remote monitoring needs. Requiring no installation, the 70001 MobiCam system's compact design and wireless technology allow you to position the camera and monitor virtually anywhere making it both easy to use and completely portable. The 70001's camera features automatic voice-activated video transmission with an adjustable sensitivity, as well as IR (InfraRed) LEDs (light emitting diodes) that allow you to receive a picture in total darkness, making it an ideal solution as a baby monitor or for other in-home surveillance.
The 70001 MobiCam's camera utilizes the NTSC signal system to achieve 510 by 492 effective pixels of resolution. The IR LED emitters allow this camera to receive a picture under no-light (0 Lux) conditions up to 10-feet away, while the built-in microphone allows for one-way audio transmission and enables the voice-activated video transmission feature. The MobiCam's camera includes a built-in 2.4 GHz omni-directional antenna and three selectable channels that allow you to use multiple cameras with a single monitor. This unit's compact design allows it to be placed in tight spaces such as cribs or shelves, while its adjustable ball-mount-style camera lens lets you achieve an optimum viewing angle. The MOBI 70001 camera can run on either nine-volts DC power via an included AC/DC adapter or eight AA batteries for additional portability, and has an operating temperature of 0 to 40 degrees Celsius.
The 70001 MobiCam's 2.4 GHz monitor allows for signal reception from up to 300-feet away with a clear line of sight. This unit utilizes a 1.5-inch TFT (Thin Film Transistor, or active-matrix) LCD (liquid crystal display) screen that provides you with a clear and sharp picture with 490 by 240 effective pixels. The MOBI 70001 monitor includes three selectable channels to allow you to monitor multiple rooms, and a standard A/V (audio/video) output jack for connecting to a TV or VCR. The 70001's monitor runs on batteries or via an included AC/DC adapter, while optional PC software and an adapter allows for automated recording via the Internet, your cell phone or pager.
Technical Features:

Signal distance: up to 300-feet (clear line of sight)
Signal types: 2.4 GHz wireless transmission, NTSC TV system
Sensitivity: minimum illumination of 0 Lux up to 10-feet
    Effective pixels: 510 x 492 for camera, 490 x 240 for monitor
Camera operating temperature: 0 to 40 degrees Celsius
    Camera dimensions: approximately 9.2 x 5.9 x 12.3 centimeters (W x D x H)
Designed primarily for indoor use, the MOBI 70001 MobiCam system deserves serious consideration as one of the easiest and most portable economical monitoring solutions available, especially for parents traveling with a small child. While both camera and monitor are freestanding units, mounts are included for each allowing additional installation options. This system is made in the USA and was the winner of the 2004 iParenting Media Award. Users should note that the camera's image sensor may become permanently damaged if exposed to long hours of direct sunlight or halogen light, so the camera should not be mounted or pointed directly at the sun or other bright-light sources.
About Surveillance Camera Technical Features
Lux rating is the measurement used to indicate how sensitive a camera is to light, and stands for the level of light reflected off a piece of paper by a candle from one meter away. Thus a sensitivity of three Lux would mean a camera could generate an acceptable picture of a piece-of-paper-sized object that was illuminated by the equivalent of three candles from one meter away. The lower the Lux level, the better the camera's ability to work in low-light conditions. The camera's resolution should be greater than or equal to the resolution supported by the system's recorder or monitor. The S/N, or signal to noise ratio, is an important measure of a camera's quality. A poor camera, low-light conditions or poor wiring causes "noise" which consumes processing power and disk space. A camera with a wide dynamic range is ideal, especially for recording areas in which both indoor and outdoor light are present. CCD (charge-coupled device) sensors provide high-quality images that are less susceptible to noise. CMOS (complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors offer less image quality, but are usually more cost-effective and energy efficient.

This system is an excellent combination of portability and power! Check out this line if like me, you've found netbooks wanting.

After migrating from my full-size notebook, all 7lbs of Core 2 goodness, to an Atom based netbook, the tradeoffs for size were cramping my style. My typing slowed, my eyes hated it, and it just wasn't responsive enough. Worse, the 2GB maximum RAM limitation meant running my virtual machines were out of the question. The experience left me discouraged and I fully expected to become one of the last victims of a $1500 ultra-portable.

In contrast, this thing is fast, it has a full-size keyboard, much more useful screen, drives a larger external display (VGA or HDMI(!)), can have 4GB RAM, and has twice the battery life if you don't thrash it. (my previous netbook only had the 3-cell battery). It's all wrapped in a package that appears to most people the same size as the little 10" versions. I can't tell the weight difference if I'm not holding them both at the same time. And the price! The Black Friday discount was minimal but now that I've used it and can compare, I'd gladly re-buy this one at retail. This thing is the netbook for those who can't quite squeeze down to the little N270/280 boxes. Whereas the Atoms feel like a cute attempt at a notebook, running a "sort-of" mobile processor, this thing feels like a real system, but it's small and cheap.

Pros (vs Atom-based netbook)
- See above - speed, screen size, speed, keyboard, RAM, speed, etc.
- Dual-core headroom.
- Touchpad is 50% larger and buttons are separate vs. D250 rocker style.
- The additional indicator lights are always a good thing. Power, charge, bluetooth wifi, HD, Numlock, capslock.
- The integrated video can drive a huge external monitor.
- Windows 7 Home, 64-bit version
- Gb Ethernet.
- N draft WiFi.

Cons & quibbles:
- I prefer matte screens, but this isn't bad for glossy.
- Red color - others were another $50.
- HD mounting and connector are a kludge. HD secured by pressure between pads and external cover. No real lock. Uses ribbon cable adapter to match its 90 degree rotation to board. It isn't going anywhere, but it's a big contrast to the D250's very clean HD mount.
- Keys are completely flat, as is their action. I'm getting used to it.
- Too little space between keys makes it easy to touch-type the wrong keys. It's tough to feel the boundaries.
- Windows COA sticker on bottom was applied slightly off-center and the edges keep peeling.
- Default settings for touchpad make it very easy to accidentally "tap" when typing, sending cursor into the weeds or sometimes doing big unintended edits.
- Power plug (computer end) & socket seem fragile.
- Case material seems a bit fragile. Not a ThinkPad.
- Very slightly noisier than Atom systems. Most noticeable when the fan cycles on and off repeatedly while running something processor intensive.
- WiFi slide-switch fragile & action uncertain.
- No built-in Bluetooth on this model though it does have the BT slide-switch and indicator. Inside, next to the Intel 1000 WiFi card, you can see pads on circuit board where BT socket option might have gone.
- I know I'll wish it had a 4th USB port.

If you're looking for something both smnall AND functional give this thing a try.

(Thank you Acer!)

This is a great little printer.First page out in 7-8 seconds, and after that a page every two seconds. It is loud, but only while printing. After that a fan runs for about 30 seconds and then shuts down (I returned a Brother 2170 because the fan would run for 15-30 minutes after printing a single page).Installation was a snap. The printer also comes with a regular toner cartridge rather than a "starter" cartridge.Highly recommended.

When I received the Belkin Wireless N+ Router, I set it up it right in front of a window in my house. (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CEYYFK/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_title)Setup was super easy and I turned on 802.11b/g/n to all transmit/receive at the same time.I also purchased a Belkin Wireless N+ 802.11n USB Adapter (Black) (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001CF2TYC/ref=cm_cr_rev_prod_title) and installed it in my brand new Dell laptop. The combination worked flawlessly, setup was super easy, and the security was a snap to set up.

I received at least four lights all over our one story house including 80' away through a number of walls. My new laptop's built-in N-card/antenna did not work nearly as well as the Belkin N+ adapter.

I took the laptop and the Belkin N+ Adapter for a walk while keeping the window and router in my line of sight. At approximately 325' from the router, I still had full signal strength!I finally lost the signal about 380' feet from the router.

I also tried the Belkin adapter with a 7-year old, 512Mb ram HP laptop and got similar results - full signal at 325'.

Panasonic BL-C1A-S Network Camera and Pet Cam (Silver) Review

Panasonic BL-C1A-S Network Camera and Pet Cam
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've got a very high end version (PTZ-360 20x optical zoom) and the core of the o/s is the same as this camera which was a gold box item. 80% of the functions were the same.

1. throw the camera on your network-> panasonic sells a really good ethernet over power kit. If you search around you'll find its rather cheap. this kills the power and network in one stone. i use one master and 11 slaves in my house to do powerline networking.

2. the camera is odd in that it disregards the dhcp server and jumps to the x.x.x.253 address on your network. so if you have 192.168.1.1 as a router the camera jumps out of the box to 192.168.1.253; then just browse to that page since these cameras have the newest firmware and it will require you to setup an admin password. now i'd strongly suggest you move the camera to a static ip since disconnections will occur and static ip's have no recovery time nor do they move around if your router gets twonky and decides to move everything around. Also with TWO cams you definitely want to move them off the .253 address since they could collide should something reset. Most routers leave 100 ip's (like x.x.x.2-x.x.x.99) alone so you could just move them out of dhcp range and set them up.

3. triggers -> just like the big brother panasonic net cams this has the same design but with very little nvram. the best scenario imo is to setup the unit to FTP the images somewhere when a trigger (motion on XX to YY day of week, during XX to YY hours) occurs. These can pump out alot of emails; i do not recommend this transport.

good stuff ask a networking buddy for help. the cd included is never used. this camera is comaptible with apps like webcam XP pro

AXIS Network Camera 213 PTZ - digital video camera ( 0220-004 ) Review

AXIS Network Camera 213 PTZ - digital video camera
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have two Axis 213-PTZ cameras. They are one serial number apart and were obtained at the same time. One works great. The zoom is amazing. The U/I leaves a bit to be desired and there are some features lacking - most notably the ability to limit an "operator" account to just selecting the preset positions. If you allow operator access, they can use all the functions of the camera. There are workarounds documented in the Axis customer forum - but they involve crafting control scripts.

The other camera, after a flash upgrade of the firmware, failed with a "NO VIDEO" message. Axis says it is a known hardware issue and charged me $75 to "repair" the camera.I reinstalled the unit and it had exactly the same error.I am far less than satisfied with the service.
You can follow this case on the Axis Forum at this URL:
http://custforum.axis.com/viewtopic.php?p=3240&sid=f283bd219e1e49931b9c14014c4d4512#3240
I am wondering how long it will take to get this fixed.

I like the camera - but Axis customer service leaves much to be desired. It is all documented in the forum page.

For the high cost of this camera, I think the money is better spent on a Sony or Panasonic

Hawking HRPG1 HomeRemote Pro Control and Remote Monitoring Internet Gateway (White) Review

Hawking HRPG1 HomeRemote Pro Control and Remote Monitoring Internet Gateway
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Update April 6, 2010:After several additional conversations with 'Cal' at Hawking home automation tech support, I have finally given up on the Hawking gateway and camera, tossed both in the garbage bin, and purchased a Vera gateway from MiCasaVerde.I have been able to attach to all devices in my home and have everything working perfectly (including the Wayne-Dalton thermostat). The Vera control website is easy to use and there is no subscription fee (unlike Hawking).Additionally, there is a very active forum on the MiCasaVerde website that is excellent in terms of describing proper device set-up, potential modifications, etc.I regret having wasted as much time and money as I did on the Hawking set-up, but I'm thrilled with the Vera and with MiCasaVerde. If you are considering the Hawking gateway - just don't.Buy a Vera.

Original Review:I did quite of bit of research looking for technology that would let me control lights, appliances and thermostat settings via the internet for our vacation home. From a design perspective, Hawking's z-wave controller has all of the features I was looking for.Individual devices can be turned on and off, devices can be linked to simultaneously turn on or off and "scenes" can be created to execute a series of commands based on a schedule or the activation of a single device (e.g. turn on one light and a series of devices can be turned on).

But great designs are worthless if the technology is extremely immature and/or full of bugs.Compound these problems with one of the worst tech support groups I've ever dealt with and you'll have Hawking's Home Automation product group (note - Hawking's home automation tech support is not the same as the India-based group that supports their networking and computing products...unfortunately Home Automation seems to be staffed by one gentleman named "Cal" whose standard answer is "send an email to the product manager" - not one of which as ever been answered).

I have been able to get lights and appliances to turn on/off on a basic schedule. Now the list of things that don't work.I have reported all these to Hawking with not a single response (as yet -but I'm still hoping!) from the mysterious product manager:

1.The gateway does not recognize my Wayne Dalton thermostat as a thermostat. As a result, I can not adjust temperature settings or even see the current temperature in the house. This is a known problem - still waiting for a fix from Hawking. No response since July 2009

2.The gateway gets its current time from Hawking's servers. The Hawking server time is now off by two hours. To fool the server, I have to set all of my on/off times two hours earlier than I actually want them to occur.Problem reported to Hawking in April 2009 with no response from the "product manager".

3.Hawking's HRPC2 camera (designed to work with this gateway) would not work as long as I was using a Motorola cable modem and wireless router.Reported the problem to tech support (Cal, as usual) and was told that there was no problem. When I finally switched to a Linksys router, I got the camera to work (after several hours of playing with settings).Unfortunately the picture quality is terrible and many of the features do not work as described.

You should be able to tell that I really, really, REALLY want this technology to work.I have dozens of hours invested in trying workarounds and dealing with "Cal", the solo tech support guy.Unfortunately, it's just too full of bugs and Hawking seems disinterested in this part of their product line.I suspect that they haven't sold enough of these things to warrant any real effort. If they'd just work with me, I would happily update this review.Reading the reviews for the HRPC2 camera (all of which are 1-star), I see that I'm not alone in my frustration with Hawking.I have started researching alternative technologies and can't wait to toss all of this Hawking equipment in the garbage bin.

The HomeRemote Pro Internet Gateway is the heart of the Hawking Technologies HomeRemote Pro Home Control and Remote Monitoring System. The HomeRemote Pro Internet Gateway:

Gives you remote control of your home's surveillance system, appliances, and more.
Doesn't require any hard-wiring or special installation.
    Uses Z-Wave wireless mesh technology.
Note: this product includes only the Pro Internet Gateway. To build a HomeRemote Pro Home Control and Remote Monitoring System, you will also need to add HomeRemote Pro accessories or Z-Wave-enabled products (all sold separately) to your home. For everything you need to set up a system, the HomeRemote Pro Starter Kit includes this Gateway, a Pro Door/Window Sensor and a Pro Lamp Module.
How the HomeRemote Pro Monitoring System Works
The HomeRemote Monitoring System is an award-winning system that lets you monitor your home, secure it from intruders, and control its appliances and power usage via a cell phone or an Internet browser while you're

You can also use it to monitor your children or pets, or keep tabs on an elderly family member. And business owners can use the system to keep an eye on their premises or employees.
By connecting the Pro Internet Gateway to your Internet router, you'll effectively create a wireless network that "connects" your home to the Internet. And by adding HomeRemote Pro accessories to your home, such as a Pro Door Sensor or Pro Lamp Module, or other HomeRemote Pro-enabled products, such as Electrical Appliance modules or Pro Motion Detectors (sold separately), you'll have the option of remotely controlling your heating and cooling system, lighting, blinds, garage door, and virtually any electrical appliance in your home.
If you want to add surveillance features to your property, by installing HomeRemote Pro video cameras, such as the Wireless Video Camera or Video Camera with Night Vision, you can monitor your premises 24/7 in real time from virtually any place in the world.
Award-Winning Z-Wave Wireless Technology
At the heart of the HomeRemote Pro System is Z-Wave wireless "mesh" technology, an award-winning wireless standard for home automation. Unlike traditional remote technologies that rely on

With Z-Wave, the guesswork and finger-crossing is taken out of the equation.
Because each "module" or HomeRemote Pro accessory acts as a repeater that extends the distance of the Z-Wave signals, with a few easily installed and strategically placed HomeRemote Pro accessories, your entire home can be covered in a matter of minutes without any hard-wiring or special installation.
Easy Set Up: No Special Tools or Wiring Required
Setting up a HomeRemote Pro Monitoring System up couldn't be easier. Once you connect the Pro Internet Gateway to your router, you log into the HomeRemote Pro Web site, where you can customize your HomeRemote Pro System by naming the rooms in your home. (You can also personalize your HomeRemote Pro Web page with photos of yourself and other custom touches.) Then it's just a matter of plugging accessories into outlets throughout your home and adding them to your system.
The "installation" of HomeRemote Pro accessories is as easy as plugging in one of the several HomeRemote Pro modules into available electrical outlets. Once the modules, which are about the size of typical home appliance timers, are connected, you simply plug your lamp or appliance into it. The modules let you control appliances remotely (you can schedule them, or turn them on or off on demand), and they will also act as "repeaters" that effectively extend your home's Z-Wave wireless network.
You're now ready to control your home through a browser from anywhere in the world. And by adding your cell phone number to your account settings, your Internet-enabled cell phone can be used to control your home and even stream video of particular rooms.
Note: HomeRemote Pro has two levels of services, basic and pro. Some features mentioned above require a pro-level service. Click here for a comparison chart of the differences in features and capabilities between the basic and pro-level services.
Other HomeRemote Pro Features
The HomeRemote Pro System offers several customization and monitoring features that give you the ultimate in control and oversight of your home.

Using your cell phone, you can access your HomeRemote-connected appliances and surveillance equipment from anywhere. View larger. The system's Scene/Scheduler feature allows you to create a rule that applies to a group of different appliances. For example, instead of turning all your lights off one by one from your cell phone as you're leaving your house, you can set a Scene called "All Lights Off" that turns off all your lights with the press of a button, or turns them off on schedule you've created.
The Alerts and Notifications feature send email and text (SMS) message alerts to designated recipients whenever a specific event, such as the opening of a door, occurs within a room. Device Linking allows one module or sensor to trigger other modules to turn on or off. Opening a door, for instance, could trigger all the lights in your home to turn on.

The optional Pro Video Camera (L) and Pro Video Camera with Night Vision (R) lets you monitor your home from anywhere in the world. View larger. And to help you keep an eye on your property, Activity Logs let you view recent and past events in your home if you suspect suspicious activity, or if you simply want to monitor your home while you're away.
Expanding your HomeRemote Pro System
The HomeRemote Pro System can be customized to grow as your needs grow. You can add additional HomeRemote Pro Wireless Door Sensors, Motion Detectors, Appliance Modules and Lighting Modules, or specialty products, such as window shades, thermostats, garage door openers, keyless door locks, light switches, and outdoor lighting modules from other HomeRemote Pro compatible manufacturers. The HomeRemote Pro System is compatible with all products featuring the award-winning Z-Wave technology logo.
HomeRemote Pro Services
Basic-Level service is included with a purchase of this Pro Internet Gateway and with the HomeRemote Pro Starter Kit. HP P2035 LaserJet Printer Monochrome Review

Perhaps HP has had a bad run of late, but our first printer worked for 2 weeks before it started jamming. The replacement worked for 2 days before it started jamming. We opted to not try a third and went with another manufacturer, I would say avoid this printer until they iron out their feeding issues.

SWANN SW-C-BLACKK Black Knight Wireless CCD Color Camera Review

If you or a neighbor has a wireless Internet connection, and few purchasing this item would not, or a wireless phone using the 2.4Ghz spectrum, skip this product. Even with multiple channel capability the interference renders this product useless. Further, an e-mail on a driver issue for the video capture board took nearly a week for a terse response. Spend the extra money for a wired solution and save yourself from disappointment.

Swann PC DVR 4 Net Review

Swann PC DVR 4 Net
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Good:
- Nice price point.
- Works well (exlcuding occasional startup lockups) and nice internet connection software.
- Great cameras, many available (I use the bulldog camera from them)
- Powerful software to record and monitor your security with. However, the manual is quite poor and some of the systems are hard to understand.

The Bad:
- Has to be 1024x768 resolution, if your resolution is higher you have to lower your resolution.
- The manual was written by someone who speaks english as their second language as someone else mentioned. So it is very hard to understand to say the least. I wish they would take the time to professionally rewrite this.
- The system restarts itself every 10-30 to free up resources which is a great idea but.... The program locks up on startup frequently. So in my case I have to get into the hot attic and restart the computer which has this card and runs my security system manually every couple of months.

Bottom line, good card and system, and if Swann Company took the time to fix the few minor bugs and released a patch and new documentation, it could easily be a 5 star security solution.

Iomega StorCenter Pro ix4-200d 4 TB (4 x 1 TB) Network Attached Storage Server 34549 Review

Iomega StorCenter Pro ix4-200d 4 TB Network Attached Storage Server 34549
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Iomega StorCenter ix4-200dPromises, Promises

The Iomega StorCenter models are a promising trend in NAS devices: there needs to be solutions that address the needs of the small office / home office without invoking requirements to have a mini-IT department to run things for you, and the ix4-200d seems to fill that bill.

So when I picked-up the Iomega Storcenter ix4-200d last weekend, I was quite hopeful.

Who can argue with the value of the following? 4 TB of raw storage, RAID 5 / 10 / JBOD capability, 1 GB network connectivity and even VMWare certification (for those of us who tinker with many OS's and need such a thing). But more importantly, I like others, have grown out of the Western Digital MyBooks that litter our offices and recognize the need for a more robust storage solution.

So, as my first venture, I set the thing up to be the main backup unit in my home.It was a mistake.

I am familiar enough with Windows and Linux to recognize that as I configure the thing for the first time that there is some embedded version of a *nux OS with Samba running with a nice front end to make it an easy experience to add the storage into my network.and I was doubly impressed to see that I could add the device to my active directory domain. To top it off, theiSCSI functionality inspired my thinking around my use of VMWare and the use of virtual storage solutions. But as excited as I was to explore all this functionality in such a cost-effective box, my prudence forced a more conservative approach, and I focused my energy on just creating a solid data store environment.

My prudence paid-off:I can't get the thing to run reliably for more than 2 or 3 days at a time, and it has been a pain to get any of the special features to work for me.

For example:That WD MyBook drive I mentioned above was 300 GB of data.I wanted to use the "QuikTransfer" feature advertised on the device. So I plugged-in the drive to the Iomega USB port, and waited...and waited...and eventually the device display shows a window asking if I want to transfer data (I assume it was cataloging what needed to be copied).I select "yes" (and very happy with the simplicity of the approach) and then waited. And waited.Slowly, VERY slowly, it reports 1% complete, then 2%, then 3%...by the end of the day it gets to 25%.Why so slow??But I'm patient, and I wait. 2 days (!) later I check in the morning, and the thing fails. I mean, just stops at 71% complete. No response. No activity. No error message! With 2 days invested I try everything I can to revive the box, but to no avail. So I reboot the box.I try one effort to restart the copy process, but it doesn't work, so I give up.

OK, I'm thinking the Quiktransfer feature (which is quite prominent in the device marketing)is buggy, I can live with that.So I plug the WD MyBook drive into my PC with 1.4 TB of storage to spare and copy the contents over in the matter of a few hours. (**note** It turns out that there was an apple backup with unusually long path+filenames on the drive which caused a problem on copy, and which probably stopped the Quicktransfer dead in its tracks. The windows transfer method at least provided a message so that I could skip those files and then move on). Then I transfer that content to the ix4.It was MUCH faster and a more transparent process, so that is what I plan to do for the other USB storage devices that I plan to consolidate.

The next morning, I check back on how my new storage array is doing.I had copied all my archive files and music into the thing and was looking forward to playing with the media sharing abilities. But what did I find?A dead brick. While I could ping the IP, none of the networking services worked. So I reboot again!Fortunately, the data didn't go away.On the other hand, that is not much comfort for spending $700 on a device that was going to be the backbone of SOHO accessibility and reliability!

I'm sorry to say that I'm back in the market for the right device.Perhaps I just picked up a unit before the software team had a chance to catch-up to functional spec and by the time you read this they've scrambled on fixing the thing.I sincerely believe the feature set is dead-on and Iomega/EMC has a potential winner, but it is a BIG miss from a marketing standpoint if they think they can push storage reliability products out the door before the product is truly ready.Good luck guys.
